I was unpopular in high school but in college I had a cult of followers who called me “miyagi”

not popular, but on the cooler end of the geek squad (in band, soccer team, into decent music comparatively to peers, etc). it was the late 90s so this wasn't anything special, but generally we got along with most "types"

i was the most truant person in my grade to graduate thanks to massive anxiety + drugs. i was not popular, but my younger sister was very popular, athletic, and academically successful. when people found out we were related it was always a mindblower.

I was a popular kid in the IB program, mid level in the theatre nerd/stage crew scene, entry level poser with the punk kids, and non-entity to the rest of the majority black/Haitian high school I was bussed into. So I’d say I was pretty well-rounded!

I don't think anyone was really popular at my school

or maybe I was just so peripheral that the gossip was too far away to even perceive

Not sure if this is a normal trajectory but

I wasn't popular, pure gothnerd, but I played sports and every one in my team hated me and I'd always be pulling stunts to avoid getting my ass kicked

But by senior year I think the whole class hit a maturation point or spent enough time with each other and we were all pretty friendly

I think my senior class was like 400 kids but it seemed a chill year and everyone got along: studs, hot chicks, goofs, jocks, pretty boys, floaters, studious "librarian" girls, nobodies, dirtboys, punks, slunks, artists, the guy who farted out loud and didn't care, swing dancers, goths, Visigoths, hep cats, perverts, Darren, moms, hackers, powerlifter girls ...

All good pals

the Darren at my school was a year older than me. when i was in third grade we were at the same sleepaway camp and like every lunch time for the entire two weeks we were at camp he and i and four other friends would sit at the same table and play "pokemon charades". then we wound up at the same middle school. the first day i was walking between orientations and he was sitting with a group of other 8th graders i didnt know and he kind of jeered at me "HEYYY. are you still playing POOKEMON CHARAAADES?" in a way that felt like he was trying to throw me to the wolves. and i was like "what? no". and he played pokemon charades too, so what the hell. but in retrospect maybe he was just trying to be my friend and i was being oversensitive. i guess i can never really know Darren's truth

My attire was positively horrendouz

I would wear courderouy pants, long sleeve shirt and A VEST every day

I wore black dress shoes that I entirely painted with silver spray paint (my mom thought I was huffing).

I made my own wallet chain that once got to be 4ft long and it got stuck in a chair in such a way that power tools were required and the chair was destroyed

My hair was shoulder length and burned from my attempt to dye it black. The damage lasted from junior year to sophomore in college

In short, I was the coolest kid in class

I feel like especially if you stay in your hometown high school was very important but ...not ..so much if you move somewhere

I was like a minor character actor at best during high school but I still feel like the first 2 years of college left a much bigger impression than anything in high school. If I go back to my hometown there's like a handful of people I kept up with but everybody else is a mystery. And then I go on facebook and see like all those people hanging out with the people they were hanging out with back then

definitely not, but it didn't matter, I was just neutral for the most part. it was a small catholic high school and I only went there because my mom was terrified of the public school, so I just ended up making friends with a bunch of public school kids I met at my after school grocery store job. though, the one good friend I did make through high school is the only person from that era of my life that I still keep in touch with and regularly see, so idk.

In high school? No. I cared about being popular in sixth grade then moved over to a goth kid by eighth grade. Then in high school I went from goth kid to stoner who loved Radiohead and probably radiated “Please don’t talk to me.”

Was not out. tbh I identified more with my teachers than my peers. I always went to the library during lunch and did my homework or posted in my deadjournal. Teachers liked me cause I could answer questions they asked because I actually did the work and made As and Bs. Wore headphones a lot on the bus and in the halls and no one ever really bothered me.

I had a 3 nights a week job washing dishes at a pizza place near my house and spent the other nights of the week smoking with my older brothers and their friends in the woods behind my mom’s house. I had 2 school friends, who were a couple through high school. If I was with them outside of school we would play GameCube, draw, paint, or smoke.
