Paper chase cases take a lot of people.

I am genuinely amused (in a good way) that the FBI went after this stuff in a pretty big way. It does not seem like the kind of stone-turning that this administration would go in for, given that it's basically an indictment of everything they do and everything they think about how the world should work.

I'm sure the point has been made in the thread already (I didn't read it all), but absent glaring inequality and the precarity that even the richest can feel in a hypercompetitive winner-take-all world, and absent the further belief that the public system is too crippled to rely on, people don't act like this. That they do is symptomatic of a whole lot of underlying problems. That the FBI is digging into it, under the most corrupt president we've ever had, is therefore, to me, surprising.

And good, and timely, given how this can and should push the conversation for 2020, and maybe even wake up a few of these blinkered dipshits to how their go-to strategies are increasingly hazardous and failing them along with everyone else.

Maybe they only did this for USC, UCLA, etc. because they wanted their kid to stay close to home. Kind of the ultimate helicopter parent move

the main conspirator had an associate athletic director on the inside at usc, and she was actually the clearinghouse for athletic admissions, so she could spread out the spots needed for the fraudulent admissions across multiple teams. at other schools, he generally only had one coach on the inside, with maybe one or two spots a year for sale. consequently, the bribery at the other schools was more expensive.

also, they did have a minimum sense of plausibility. they actually steered some parents away from shooting for certain schools because it was so implausible that it would attract too much attention.

you did occasionally have a high school guidance counselor looking into how their student gained admission to usc as a water polo player when they knew they didn't play the sport. it never seemed to go anywhere, though, as the associate athletic director intercepted most of the inquiries.

Mark Riddell was typically paid $10,000 to take SAT or ACT tests on behalf of students or fix their answers, according to court documents. Much of the success of the first part of Singer's plan -- getting higher scores for students on the SATs and ACTs -- relied on the smarts of 36-year-old Mark Riddell.
Riddell, a resident of Palmetto, Florida, was the director of college entrance exam preparation at IMG Academy, a private college prep school and sports academy in nearby Bradenton. He graduated from IMG Academy in 2000 and then attended Harvard University, where he played varsity men's tennis until graduating in 2004.
As part of the scheme, Riddell typically would take the standardized tests on behalf of the students or fix their incorrect answers, prosecutors said. Singer and Riddell also bribed the test administrators so that Riddell could take the test without being caught.
Riddell typically was paid $10,000 per test, according to court documents. Interestingly, there is no allegation that Riddell stole the test answers or cheated to get the answers. He was just good at taking them. So good, in fact, that Singer would have Riddell fly from his home in Florida to testing centers in Houston and Los Angeles, where the bribed test administrators worked.
In one case, Riddell was able to successfully fake a student's handwriting. In July 2018, a wealthy parent provided Singer with an example of her child's handwriting so that Riddell could imitate it when taking the test in his place. Riddell also had a sharp eye for achieving a specific score. That same parent told Singer she wanted Riddell to get a 34 on the ACT on behalf of her son. (The maximum is a 36.) Riddell took the test for the student and then called Singer and predicted he would get a 35, the documents state. Later, the ACT score came back: He got a 35.

I'm genuinely a little annoyed that I didn't get in on Riddell's scam.

Fuck, 18-year-old me would have been so good at that. Now it's too late, my brain is mush.
