I wish these guys weren't playing Pitchfork. I don't want to see this band at like 2pm on a Sunday in the park.

Schlagenheim was recorded with Speedy Wunderground producer Dan Carey, who the band praises for his quick, unfussy approach. black midi laid down eight of the record’s nine tracks in just five days. The process was one of refining and rebuilding tracks around the initial structures. Five hour jams would sometimes yield a riff that then became a few bars of a song. As anyone who’s been lucky enough to catch black midi live over recent months will testify, black midi’s songs are slippery creatures.

The next step on their slightly unconventional path: Their just-announced debut album Schlagenheim will not feature any of those singles, and they’re not revealing any of the song titles until release day. All we know is it has nine tracks totaling 43 minutes.

that whole twitter thread is bad. but this is just typical shit for any guitar band that gets modestly hyped in 2019. reference points + "am i just getting old???" blah blah. they don't just sound like the fall, that band was never that proggy. stop being so reactionary

Saying any vaguely post-punk band with semi-spoken vocals sounds like the Fall is lazy and cliche.

I love the Fall too of course. They’re obviously a much different band. I feel sorry for Protomartyr, they’ve probably had to bear the brunt of Fall comparisons for the few years they’ve been around. And they’re obviously too their own thing.
