I mean, they're picking him up off Nemesis, so it's not like they're outright ruining anything except the opportunity to make a good show, so I'm not bummed they tried or anything.

i truly hope not.

there's sadly quite a bit i find bad about this already, but the egregious use of lens flare annoys me most

Brannon, Berman and Piller totally burned themselves out creatively going from Voyager to Insurrection to Enterprise without a break. Once Nemesis was handed over to Stuart Baird and John Logan there was no going back

In retrospect they should have brought in someone of Ron Moore's caliber at the beginning of Voyager, let Piller develop the TNG movies, and told Berman and Braga to peace out

nice to see that picard is like most american shows, in that when a violent death is needed, a big black body to suffer it is never far away.

cool how the elf cut his head off though

i am such a sucker for this form of narative where theyre like on an epic journey and have to assemble the team and each chapter is like a little side story or origin story about the team member they're picking up but like none of these backstories or sidestories have any interesting tension or surprises.

also i totally missed that the former borg dude was Hugh until they said it again this week. but i guess thats on me?

I didn’t think this episode was that bad but the show has done nothing but move pieces into place, there’s no actual story

This show would be way more interesting if it was about Picard leading the rescue attempt, not dumb shit 14 years later

I’ll watch this three months from now on a really long transatlantic flight and will have only the absolute hottest takes, but the world will have already moved on

a lot of you have bad takes.

like what were you expecting? 9 episodes of picard on his farm meeting a new alien culture with vaguely relatable contemporary issues each week?
love you guys!

@trekcore which is normally a very good account got into a dumb argument today about what timeline picard takes place in

its weird how ok we are with creating in-universe reboots and parallel continuity in comics with minimal justification beyond some cosmic reset button or shifting from one timeline to another but trek fans- because it has a veneer of scientism- get super hung up on mechanics of various time branches and loops alternate universes, despite trek TT rules having had basically no internal logic or consistency ever.

there's a toxic side of the fandom intent on denying that discovery/picard are canon -- and one way of doing that seems to be by declaring those shows an offshoot of the kelvin timeline. which is incorrect, and "canon" arguments are beyond dumb in the of perpetual franchising anyway. all canon is broken now.

i do enjoy the nerdy side of it though so saw this article linked in the twitter thread: https://adamhunault.com/2017/09/30/the-fifteen-timelines-of-star-trek/amp/
