the decade really hit it's stride for me from 2012 - 2015 (particularly, Q3 of 2014 to Q1 of 2015 -- ruins, pom pom, black messiah, carrie and lowell). 2012 was an insane year though.

I remember thinking 2016 was really strong too, and 2017 kinda weak, lol.

confirms that I didn't like as much from 2018 but it was kind of a shitty year for me personally.

between dust and main pop girl rn to round out the 20.

i put all these entries (as of today) in a google sheet with usernames. i tried to put rankings if people said they were ordered or had 1-20 by them. this link is editable. feel welcome to improve the list in this sheet, or you can copy it to another sheet out to do whatever with.

sheet 1 is alphabetical by album.
I've added a list of albums already mentioned in lists 3+ times.

link to google sheet of entries so far: Spoiler

notes on the copy/pasting: i didn't verify the entries all being written the same way. there'd need to be a little bit of review in here to make sure any tally system would be accurate. while copy/pasting, i used "." as a text to column divider, so some of the albums with "vol. #" or other "." with text after got cut off. sheet 2 is the list in order of posts.

update: added more lists-- the page 1 started to be formatted better (same album to have same format), but very not complete. if anyone wants to copy the correct artist/album format over a section of album names that were input different then feel welcome to help improve the list ("ie. "Kanye West - The Life of Pablo vs. "Kanye - TLOP" -- please use either the fully spelled out version or how it's listed it on the album's release so people can look these up much easier - consistency matters when trying to find how many times it appears in the list)

as much as I like cindy lee and the early viet cong stuff, it's a bummer we didn't at least get one or two more women records. public strain is so god damn good

also happy to see the love for pom pom, as it's my favorite of the decade. I know ariel's problematic and all but I honestly think bobby jameson > before today, aside from sequencing I guess.

to me it is "the" guitar record (at least in traditional terms) of this decade that pushed some shit ahead with a unique sound when others weren't coming close.

with king krule or something it's not guitar centered really even though there's some shared characteristics between those two. they're my favorites though

not having an actress album on my list feels absolutely nuts and i blame it on not being able to choose just one.

i've also probably listened to wildarms nightcore mix more than probably half the albums on my list honestly

circa 2012 i remember my stance being that glass swords, flockaveli, and before today would be considered the three most important blueprint 2010s albums and considered so by the end of the decade and now they're not on my list and idk what to think about that. will probably add them in somewhere.

the biggest surprise to me in terms of the consensus album pick for the artist is good kid, m.a.a.d city

i think good kid is just an easier record to have a personal connection to even if you don't necessarily relate to the narrative as a whole there's just little bits of coming of age stuff there that drives people to have a more intimate connection with it than his others as far as i can tell.

i don't think i can pick a favorite out of his albums from good kid onwards so i didn't list any of them lol. i think that's also why i didn't list any oneohtrix. i guess if i had to choose they'd be good kid and returnal because i have the fondest memories of listening to them. anyway.

This was the first list I made, more or less without looking up stuff

Armed courage // black messiah // simple songs // red // mvotc // making a // lifted // splazsh // the body // xxx // flockaveli // gkmc // acid rap // barter 6 // that Tour part 1 // in my arms, many flowers // towards the megalith.

Gonna try to make a second list that doesn't have any of these choices, or anything from that doc that's already been chosen 3+ times

sorry this list is 24 and not 20 but i wanted to list a bunch of stuff that hasn't been mentioned itt yet. there's no way i could ever come up with an actual top 20. i listened to all of these records countless times, mostly while driving or running or doing the dishes or laying in bed and reading the board. this list has some heavy recency bias because i significantly slowed down my consumption at the end of 2016 and i don't remember what i was super into in the first half of the decade.

it goes without saying but i'll say it anyway: i have the board to thank for all of it. there have been so many incredible taste-makers that have posted here for the past ten years i've been here. every once in a while i get real stoned and click on the Page _ of _ button and type in a number at random in the genre-specific threads in members and read or re-read incredible recommendations and thoughtful posts on the substance of the music. it's fucking staggering to think about how much music thought and recommendations were posted the past 10 years here. it's so beautiful and it makes me want to cry. thx y'all
