but the arm holding the door open is horizontally parallel to your torso, thus preventing you from actually entering the room/building/etc.

This happens to me more than I think it should.

The intention is good, but the result is an awkward encounter as I try to enter a restroom.

I'd hold the door open correctly, but I'd say thank you when you thanked me and it's a restroom door and that'd be awkward too.

I'll hold a door open if I know I am in a position to do so without blocking the other person's path. That's just common sense.

Earlier i held a door for this woman coming out and then there was a guy behind me and i actually had the thought "i need to hold the door open for them too otherwise they'll think i only hold doors open for women" which probably makes me a bad person. I mean i don't just hold it open for women, normally i dont do that much but it just so happened she was coming out right as i was opening the door and i'd have looked like a dick not holding it but i thought if i'd held it open for a guy would i have then thought i need to hold it open for the guy behind me too? Maybe i'm low-key sexist... :?

I've done that some times if i'm leaving a place and the person coming in is on the side of the hinge. i give the door a little bump so it swings a little more open and sprint off

I'm thinking of retiring from it, unless it's like an old person.

maybe they intended for you to take over door-holding duties and were just trying to save you the effort of having to re-open it?

This is possible! I'd rather they not bother.

As for "horizontally parallel", imagine if you were walking along and a person you were about to pass suddenly stuck their arm straight out in front of you.

so this person was entering the same door as you in the same direction? yeah then they were just stopping it from closing in your face until you could get a hand on it, I do this

at what distance does it become not ok to hold a door open for someone? i keep ending up in that situation where you hold it open but they're a bit too far away and they have to sort of run awkwardly to not make it inconvenient for you. i hate it.

i would go down rabbit holes like this a lot when my ocd was flaring up really bad, like almost exactly like this, and it was incredibly exhausting. so i am sorry you're having trains of thought like this. i can pretty much guarantee you that does not mean you're sexist.

When I was a kid I made this mistake almost every Sunday while Mass was letting out and I’d have to hold the door for like 50 people because you can’t just let the door swing in somebody’s face at church.
