Girls - Summertime (2009)

Health insurance rip off lying FDA big bankers buying

this is my fav girls song

the production on it is pure beauty, just gorgeous woozy mid-fi. captures the same vibe the best clientele songs do, i wish more bands would mine that sound

it's funny how they worked against seemingly all their strengths on that record.

long, turgid multipart songs. formulaic pop ballads ("love like a river," which, iirc, Owens had said he wrote "for Justin Bieber," which ... lol and "saying i love you"). dialing down the (good) lo-fi/shoegaze influence.

"alex" is still good though.

i don't think i even listened to it tbh. it's kinda weird i'm even re-visiting this band but maybe i'm nostalgic for the last turn of the decade or something. the songs are obviously catchy too

Neither Owens nor White seems to be doing much these days, at least not in terms of maintaining music careers. Owens said on Twitter a few weeks ago that Curls would take a break, since the band’s lineup hadn’t stabilized. His Etsy store is inactive, too. I don’t know what White is doing now. Are there bands who have cited Girls as an influence? If there are, I haven’t heard them. Nobody is making reverbed-out, feelings-first power pop anymore. Nobody seems terribly nostalgic for the Girls era, either. But wow, I loved that band. Still do.

When Girls broke up, I remember feeling utterly bereft. This band had so much promise! But “promise” is a meaningless concept. Girls made two great albums, which is two more than most bands. Then they ended. They never lost their way. They never hit an uninspired stretch. They never teased a festival reunion on Instagram. And they still haven’t become a nostalgic totem. That’s fine. Sometimes, a great album can just be a great album, and that’s what Album is.
i think Breihan is right to note that noone is rly citing them these days. (he's wrong that they made 2 great albums tho lol)

also it's sorta dismissive of Chrissy's two solo albums that he clearly put his heart and soul, regardless of what you think of them (I think they're ok even the one with the awful video in hindsight)

God I was obsessed with this band. One of my best friends at uni was called Laura and we had this will-they-won't-they relationship for 3 years.

Safe to say that was my most listened to track on the album.

Album is fucking perfect. When it came out I would listen to it in my dorm room all the time then go to work at urban outfitters and listen to it there the whole shift and I never even got sick of it.
