i still think it's funny that i saw wavves live twice (once as a teen, and once as almost twenty but still a teen) and it was a memorable experience because he was being an annoying person and putting on a mediocre show but he was so cocky about it i don't even care to revisit the music but this was formative in a way

wavves insulted the entire venue he was playing at (my local one) by saying it was a "teen meth lab", and we didn't have an indie scene at all. i just find that pretty memorable it's like witnessing someone at peak ego (because he'd just gotten profiled in the new york times or something a week earlier)

Listening to Hospitals - Hairdryer Peace and playing Mario Kart Wii was most of my summer 2008.

I sold the Wavves 7" with the grip tape for like $45 on Ebay and was so relieved when the guy didn't return it because it had a pretty obvious scratch.

Times New Roman were just too, too bent to the scuzzy sound. at times you just couldn't even make out the melody or riffs. kind of seemed like a 'statement' rather than people who had lots of great musical ideas. exclusively bound to the proper shoegaze tag and 2009-2010 years, the best album was The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. lots of other good records, like the first/only proper Yuck album, were a little bit later. I feel like the big records from these years (Merriweather Post Pavilion, Girls, Grizzly Bear) were more using shoegazey tropes. just underneath the main layer. which worked. they're all sort of bound by those textures and connotations, but they're all far more wide/electronic/rigidly Beach Boys-guitar-pop than that first Pains record for example.
