what you want is to split your money into three funds: a low-cost total market domestic stock index, a low cost total market international stock index, and a low cost total market bond index

the % of bonds you hold should be roughly equal to your age, ie if you're 30 you want 30% bonds and 70% stocks. adjust once a year to increase your % of bonds
