Soundtracks for Watanabe shows were super important to me, but I came to them late. I’m 32, and it was prolly a decade ago that Samurai Champloo ost hit for me, which lead to Kids on the Slope and Cowboy Bebop. Samurai champloo ost/nujabes and fat joe basically predicted and was codified into the C H I L L B E A T S 2 S T U D Y 2 thing, but I always have a weird association with some of the more sullen tracks and nitebus - not in any aesthetic way, I guess, because what the board did with nitebus was a lot different - but I came to the board and that ost at the same time, and some of the nujabes tracks were perfect for pensively staring out the window of a bus at 11 p.m. in downtown Detroit as it began the newest gentrification process, feeling super pensive and shit. There’s a line between post-dubstep tracks from yes, i do like nitebus to watching collateral to scenes from samurai champloo where fireflies are ascending into the night sky, indifferent to a big fight scene that just wrapped up, to listening to mystline over-and-over while taking a bus to your shitty Midtown studio apartment that, five years later, was renovated and going for $1,200 a month.

Dumb, rambly post. Iunno.

i was incredibly late to getting into champloo/nujabes but the bebop soundtrack was so formative to me. i loved the nujabes stuff after finally sitting down and watching champloo around 2014 too. it's very evocative of smoking ditch weed at a lan party in the late 90s. always a good vibe even if yeah, it's one that's very easy to commodify into late capitalist background hum chill beats to study to shit.

i mentioned this to my wife after getting off of work, including how many feels i caught to the op songs as a preteen and she was like "yeah... jesus same". this seems like formative music for a lot of people that i don't see talked about much?

i had a conversation with my ex a long time ago about how like... neither of us really cared about the spike story arc episodes with the epic gun fights? but the music that plays in them is very very good somehow.

the cowboy bebop soundtrack is so good. i never actually finished the show, but i remember thinking that episode that everyone loves was absolutely amazing. (do not remember what it's called.) (it comes early though?? one of the first ten episodes definitely.)

i have an hour and a half left in my shift, listening to "space lion", feeling like the forests at the end of the theatrical blade runner cut/opening of the shining.

less in a melancholic cowboy bebop mode as i was at the end of a decade i s'pose

think i'm leaving an evangelion ost feel into a pillows one. hopefully.

pretty much all human emotions can be mapped out by anime you watched when you were 12

I think I listened to Blue maybe three hundred times when I got a cheap mp3 player in high school. it came covered in a plasticwrap thing I could never figure out hwo to take off and it was maybe half the size of a snickers bar. these were two that I loved at the time:

does anyone else watch watanabe's newest, Carole & Tuesday? my brother, who originally got me into cowboy bebop and FLCL and ANIME MUSIC got me into this all over again like 17 years later. his daughters found it and showed him and he got so excited about it. this is the main banger but I like a few others.
