The game is officially pre-loaded onto my switch and ready to go. It'll be burning through me every time I open my Switch for the next month but hey whatever. Midnight March 20th baby!
I can't settle on a name yet but I'm really leaning towards Hamsterdam if it fits. Idk if I'll have all hamsters or what but I definitely want Graham back. Just look at him
I'm getting this of course, though the lack of information has me slightly worried the game is going to turn out to be different than we think it is.... I hope not!
I'm wavering between the physical cart and having it digitally. Digital makes so much sense because it's a dip in and out game, but I want the dang card

Similar vibe, different gameplay. More focused on the social aspect and there’s not much farming (unless they are adding/have already added more gardening stuff)

They call the genre of game Animal Crossing is "slow life" which while it also contains farming sims, I think slow life is a great way to describe the game. You check in daily (if possible) to do small tasks like catching bugs, fishing, digging for fossils (all of which when you get new ones you can take to the museum to build up the museum's collection) or designing the town through building, or landscaping, or cleaning it, and you have cute townspeople who ask you to do things or invite you to their house, etc. You also have a house and the main goal of the game is to pay off loans by doing the small tasks so you can make your house bigger and buy stuff to ut in it and customize the way you want and this can get super complex.
The town also changes by the time of day you're playing and what time of year it is (in real life) where the town is in winter when it's really winter and you can only collect certain bugs/fish then.
It's mostly about relaxing imo, and over time (a year plus) you have a little world that you've tweaked the way you want it to.

Yeah I would liken AC to and Harvest Moon and Stardew and maybe The Sims? It’s more design-focused with deep customization options.
You can design upholstery, clothes, wall art, pathways, flags, signs, and hopefully more stuff in this new one. Plus the sheer amount of items that you can place or manipulate and interact with is mind boggling. Certain in-game events correlate with real life seasons and holidays. Shop hours correlate to real-time and items rotate out daily. You can get special bonus items and content from monthly holiday or in-game events like fishing tourneys. Certain fish can only be found in the winter months only at night, for example. Stuff like that. Rare stuff sells for big bucks. The game rewards a collector or cataloguing mentality if you find that kind of thing rewarding. I personally do.
The online community for the game is also pretty massive and passionate, especially right after the game drops, and you can use online interactions to barter and trade with people to get things you want or need, or to flip stuff for profit.
It’s more laid back than other life sim games because it’s 100% self-paced. If you want to live in a small house and just chill forever and never pay back loans, you totally can. There’s always a reason to check in on stuff but you really set your own daily or long term goals, or just tinker with stuff til it pleases you. The game rewards your long-term time investment by upgrading shops and structures and tools and stuff.
Kenny covered it all for sure but I’d just emphasize that the game’s mechanics are relatively shallow and require minimal investment (for the most part). I find that mostly a positive because most small tasks you set for yourself can be done with relative ease.
To me the game is really all about the mood and aesthetics you’re crafting for yourself to exist inside of.
Checking in! Although I never figured out how to trade online in Pokemon, except for Surprise Trades, so I'm hoping the online situation for this is better than that!
And I feel like this year is really about, just the year of realizing stuff.
Yeah the one island per console thing is a huge bummer but being able to have 8 individual player associated structures per island is pretty neat. If you had to share an island and give up 1 out of 7 structures, nbd right? That’s still a lot of ability to fully customize and theme out an island or tell a story or create a really, elaborate and fleshed out setting. Add to that all the animal neighbors and homes you’ll be able to help customize, and (I’m assuming) late game structures you’ll be able to place, and there is going to be a lot of variety among islands as people start amassing resources.

I see some core ac fans are concerned.. because the player now has too much control, and everything was more organic before. I guess I can see that but dont really care
