What about if you did a silly song for first wave, you gotta do a serious one in the second, and vice versa?

It's not like a great idea, but I've literally never done anything but dumb joke songs for all these comps cuz I'm too self conscious to try something for real

we could do national anthems or examples of popular music from our favourite fictional or imagined alien worlds / other-dimensional realms.

alternative tuning / instrumentation / vocal methods and general unusualness would be welcomed but not mandatory

That's weird. I've spent the last week scanning selected bits/photos from the Time Life "Mysteries of the Unknown" books.

The Index to Occult Sciences stuff that Grey Poupon posted is also amazing:

https://2warpstoneptune.com/2015/03/06/index-to-occult-sciences-a-new-library-of-the-supernatural-doubleday-1977/

The satanic panic/unsolved mysteries/ghostploitation stuff is VERY MUCH my jam.

Have had some account issues, so I haven't had the chance to post in here to say that the comp came out so, so good. Too many gems to name, but I do find myself singing Gary Gorilla in a seemingly involuntary fashion more than others.

My individual contribution was Jay's Home Run.
I played on the Captain Teebs recording, which was edited into a cohesive recording by Althea, along with lurker Scrooge McDuck.

Really digging the ideas for the new comp. Let's make it happen.

Two things:
1) This corona comp. It's 2 hours of fantastic stuff. It's like Beatles' White Album. I love all songs. I used Antoine's songs to anchor the three phases of my alternate track listing, because they're so good. The Minneapolis Water / Amen Broke / Signs In The Wind / Sinking II / Away section into -> VANISH/DOOM and grammatron's synth anthem makes me smile on each listen. Gary Gorilla will forever be stuck in my mind; it's this comp's Bungalow Bill. What Is The Best Water Media is genius and the best closer ever. Wailing is fucking excellent. WeirdJungle/NormalForest nailed it. Autarch, you nailed it. Everyone nailed it.

2) The suggestions for the next comp:
"The disclosure of extraterrestrial life, which is soon to happen"
"All things paranormal and unexplained"
"Fictional or imagined alien worlds / other-dimensional realms"
"Alternative tuning / instrumentation / vocal methods / general unusualness"

Let me add:
"Uneasiness / Uncertainty"
"Walking down a dark staircase not knowing what's down there"
"The Unknown"

Like, let's just make that goddamned real proper dark psychological comp that hpn has craved for far too long.

I'm happy to take on Grey Poupon's mantle and curate this next comp, whatever the theme. I'm furloughed, I have time.

My preference is

"All things paranormal and unexplained" or
"Fictional or imagined alien worlds / other-dimensional realms"

Because it provides flexibility while still maintaining the uneasy underbelly

But I also chose the last theme so I'm happy to go with what the people want

Let's do it anyway! Maybe we need a poll for those four listed by rankoutsider to get some momentum and a new thread going

I think if we simplifiied the theme to "all things unexplained", it'd be cool

It should just be a comp of 30 different people covering the original Unsolved Mysteries theme song.

Quarantunes produced 29 songs between late March and early June: just about 80 days, two and and a half months.

Theme "all things unexplained", with a go-release of a I guess perceived Halloween date in late October means about 120 days, 4 months. Lots of time for submissions, but maybe too long? Surely we can do these comps more often? I get the theme sync-up with the holiday, but also... eh...

80 days from now means mid-September. An autumnal "All Things Unexplained" comp that will keep you going through Xmas sounds good to me.

The word ‘equinox’ is another example of Jacobean Latin-Saxon pairing. ‘Equi-‘ comes from the Latin equus, meaning ‘horse,’ and ox is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning, well, ox — literally translated, an ‘equine ox.’

Image
A medieval portrayal of an Equinox killing a warrior with its dreaded projectile whatsit.

So the Autumnal Equinox is a monstrous beast — part horse, part ox — that used to be a rational man before he sold his soul to demons and was transformed into a flesh-eating hell beast.

Out of self preservation, the tribesmen started building large fires and holding religious ceremonies in order to ward off the Equinox. Later on a belief arose that if one could manage to balance an egg vertically on the night of the Equinox’s attack, it would act as amulet capable of warding the monster off. The custom continues to this very day.

Eventually, as the population of Britain grew, the forests were cut down, cities spread, technology improved, and the Equinox has scarcely been seen since. The only memory anyone has of it is in the continuing commemoration of the night named after it at the end of every September.

Still, there are those who say that if one is alone in an English wood on this inauspicious night, the ominous keening of the ravenous Equinox can still be heard.
