I'm not reading any of these, but the controversy's definitely caught my attention - mostly the chuds crying out about "SJW" ending ruining everything, which means I'll definitely be playing the shit out of this.

Got my copy downloaded.

I’ve avoided all spoilers, but all the reviews I’ve read say it’s all misery porn.

I’m currently a knife-wielding serial killer in Red Dead Redemption II, so I think I am up to it.

I'm kind of glad that having a preschooler prevents us from playing this game. The Last of Us was by far the best game that I never want to play again. It was amazing that a video game could be that emotionally brutal, and I have the greatest respect for it as a work of art and unique gameplay experience, but it wasn't actually fun. Compelling as hell, but zero percent of that was actually fun.

So I'm extremely ambivalent about the sequel, especially given the laudatory reviews for it I've seen, and it's just as well that Kermit being around means we can't play it even if I'd wanted to, which I am totally unsure that I do.

so many of the reviews for this say that it's not fun, that it's a depressing slog with multiple points where you just feel bad about yourself. I spent an hour skipping through a reviewer's playthrough and it looks very impressive but I have no interest in being miserable playing a video game for 30 hours

I had so much boisterous fun playing say dq11 with sylvando and his gyrating boys that the idea of being glum and depressed just doesn't sound enjoyable

It's a lot more fun in games that don't spend 80% or so of their playtime trying to humanize the dudes you're beating, and the other 20% making you feel bad about how even after you beat them, the world's still gonna suck completely and you and everyone you know in it is destined for a horrible death.

(insert joke about how if i wanted that, I'd just read the news)

(which I guess is the silver lining to The Last of Us: it makes our actual reality look slightly less bad by comparison, maybe?)

were you watching or playing jointly? TLoU had pretty tight/satisfying controls/mechanics/survival systems that made it fun

also, i think the difficulty of executing mechanical successes mollifies the brutality for the player vs. a viewer

Watching. I can't play anything on a console.

I was about as down on the game then as I am now, I think. Which is to say, I really like what they did with the ending (and also the rest of the whole entire game) on the level of "professional admiration for a brilliantly conceived and executed concept that worked beautifully on all levels," but also, it was an emotionally grueling experience that I never want to have again.
