Sorry for the second thread but it gets buried in the other thread. Plus I just think this is really neat!

For those who don't know, protestors took over the East Precinct in Seattle. The police abandoned the area and let the protestors on their own who have deemed it its own independent, autonomous zone.

it's been peaceful and without incident. Police departments in Seattle and around the US are fuming.

Thoughts? Good thing that will eventually be ruined? Bad thing that should have never started? I want to hear your thoughts!

It reminds me a bit of the #OCCUPY protests and I don’t like remembering the police takedowns that took place eventually nationwide

extinction rebellion set up a few of these around london last spring, though on a much smaller scale. they lasted a little less than a week before police ramped up their interventions. it's simultaneously peaceful and electrifying when bridges, intersections, plazas, and other spaces are occupied by protestors. there's also something so aesthetically pleasurable about these autonomous zones. I love the cutoff of traffic, increased mobility, and reduction in noise. all these things, especially within bustling cities, generate gentle affective reckonings that unveil the tenuous grasp of normalcy that chokes any potential for change. I wish more people had the opportunity to move through these kinds of spaces and hope more movements center this as a strategy.

Just yesterday when I searched for #chaz I got all local tweets but today it’s full of out of town conservative garbage. I guess this is because Trump said something about Seattle?

@spekulation has a good thread about the frankly weak police disinformation campaign against the CHaZ

Yes, I don't know what the expected long term outcome is for this. If SPD were to be defunded, will this zone cease to exist? Will people pack up and leave? Will it continue as a living monument to the place in time in history? I don't know what I expect to happen either.

I really hope it remains peaceful and uncorrupted so it can be an antidote to the state and police messaging of disinformation around the country regarding the true aggressors in these protests. And hopefully provide a public, successful expression of the equality we seek and allows for a succinct, mainstream summation of the impetus behind the movement.

My low info sympathizer to all things fascist father in law who watches fox news every waking moment was going on and on about how ANARCHISTS HAVE TAKEN OVER SEATTLE yesterday, so, yeah. The stuff he chooses to get shouty about, that he first of all knows nothing about and also has even less to do with, ragecomic.

I worry about the state response too.

But this at least feels cool. I'm still not entirely sure what #occupy was supposed to accomplish. But this feels like a targeted response against the state and is designed to be an antithesis to their aggression.

i definitely read a weird defiantly propagandist account about chaz and all of the violence and supposed anti-black sentiment that's going on in there

it's gonna start to become a real problem that we cannot distill signal from the noise

The CHAZ has a website which contains a list of demands. I wish there was something about when the demands are met the CHAZ will continue to ensure accountability. Make it more than "a thing we did one summer." Don't make it be the 1960s.
