Tonight during dinner I tried to casually bring up how crazy the fires are getting and he immediately launched into arguing that we should be deforesting en masse to prevent the fires but liberals keep getting in the way. This was after he called COVID a "crock of shit." I know that when my mandatory quarantine is up I can go see my sister and BIL who are both sane science-believers (sister majored in environmental science) but until then I'm seriously wondering why I wanted to come here at all.

this is a really shitty family dynamic to have to deal with right now

my only recommendation is to punch your mom’s husband in the face if that won’t kill him. he’s a shithead anyway and direct violence is probably the only thing that will shut him up right now.

I did this with my mom’s husband and it’s been pretty effective, he barely speaks to me now

tone: sincere

on the other hand his family has threatened to call the cops if I ever come around them so it could sever ties

sky isn't nearly as red this morning as it was last night but there's still a thick layer of smoke where the sky is supposed to be and even the inside of my apartment smells like dust despite having my windows closed

can't wait to vote this fire out of office

my entire office smells like smoke and i can tell that i'm going to have trouble breathing all day.

seems like having people come to work during a respiratory virus pandemic while there's also the risk of smoke inhalation is a bad idea but maybe i'm just old fashioned.

yeah it kind of feels like that happening is basically the worst case scenario. there's some rain in the forecast for next week but if that happens then i'd imagine it would take several weeks of straight rain to actually be meaningful.

i was just reading that firefighters have had to abandon at least one of the clackamas county fires because it's gotten so out of control that it's not actually safe to fight it at this point and that the state is working on initial evacuation plans for outer southeast portland.

this is an absolute nightmare.

They're setting up the state morgue here tomorrow and we're a main evacuation destination but as mentioned the two fires merging east of Salem seems apocalyptic

Like where the fuck is the entire Willamette Valley gonna go when all the eastern roads are consumed by fire

Honestly considering just packing up my car and getting going now but I have no idea where I'd go and home ownership is the one success I've managed in this cursed world

Is there a good place to get info to follow along with what is happening? Being on the east coast, I’m not seeing hardly anything about the fires.

this sentiment is so fucking dumb

who exactly are we supposed to vote for Gavin? You simultaneously claimed to have done more than ever before to combat fires then admitted it's useless. We are not the ones in office who can craft and support effective policy, you are. this is some Pelosi-tier shit

Posted this in the journalism thread, it's a legitimately awful story so big CW for tragedy-related details. But somehow it still feels like an unnecessarily sensational spin was put on the whole thing, and when you're dealing with victims fresh in their grief you need to have some respect for that and cover the facts without treating what happened as if it were a movie. This...does not do that.

I have mixed feelings about this piece making the rounds on Twitter (was reprinted via USA Today as well). On one hand, people need to wake up to climate change and the toll these fires are taking. On the other, this family just experienced a profound loss and are likely not in the healthiest frame of mind right now to be recounting what happened, and the whole thing is written in a way that feels really exploitative and predatory. I'm not sure the husband and wife mentioned here would necessarily want these exact details of the decisions they were forced to make available publicly while they're still in the early stages of mourning. It really disturbs me how many journalists seem completely dismissive of the grieving process when it comes to acquiring information they know will be sensational. This just feels like the hot new exhibit at a zoo showing off tragedies.

air quality in portland and vancouver at toxic levels today.

someone just asked my supervisor if the city or county have plans to open more emergency shelter for houseless people and she got defensive about how "the county is more focused on housing than shelter" and "that's the city's decision, not ours".

cool!

i think that this got talked about a bit in one of the other threads, but the "antifa started the fires" has now led to posses of white nationalists hunting down photojournalists: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/christopherm51/oregon-fires-antifa-rumors?origin=shp

pretty good glimpse at what our future is gonna look like as climate change accelerates
