coop's thread was a success
we can include the korean pop thread thing in this, right? I said only the two girls generation singles were great, but this, from their latest, is really addictive:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6Bg-zxWCII2009 has lacked a big soft ballad (ryan tedder's stuff is not in this category). note the crowd screaming out names during a ballad

i can't think of any big ballads either but i imagine there had to be a few country ballads that hit it big.

Ellie Goulding won the Brits "Critics choice for 2010" thing which Little Boots won for 09.. she was a big disappointment, let's see how Goulding does.
fritz wrote:hey NGA, remember how you told me bout some big Japanese artist who wanted to breakthrough and got Stargate to produce her record
I was going to investigate this matter, but put it off, but now the thread is obviously gone
just need a refresher as to who this artist was; tried to look through Stargate production credits and couldn't find it
That was Utada Hikaru ('Utada' in the american market).
Examples of her own production:

Ellie Goulding pretty much strikes me as an uninteresting version of Little Boots.
Next yeah should be all about Mini Viva, after hearing the album sampler, i'm expecting great things.

It's a huge minefield of confusion. Their commercial pop field is marked by big budget (often thrilling) production, big budget videos and lots of gloss, but the songwriting is often lacking. Still there are plenty of genuinely great tracks each year, but consistent albums are rarer than white snow leopards. Even Utada, who should be a prime subject since she's in total control of everything in her career, stuffs her album with ballad fillers. Her best, and a good place to start, is ULTRA BLUE.

Also you could add to No Good Advice's analysis that the anime OPs/EDs make up a huge part of the singles market, good pop stuff which doesn't somehow count as very guilty pleasure isn't easy to find

I'm at a point where I'm less interested in finding new music than I've been in ten years or so. Glossing over Popjustice once a month is almost too much to ask. I just about only stick to names I know and pretty album covers. It's kind of depressing to be at this point but it's all lost excitement.
That being said, I'm hoping this thread doesn't fail me, though I don't have much of an interest in Asian pop (the extent to which I know revolves around Utada Hikaru's Kingdom Hearts song)
every kid around the world who plays soccer wants to be rivalité. i have a great responsibility to show them not just how to be like a soccer player, but how to be like a man.

adele and gavin degraw should probably stay out of this thread
rivalite, that's sad! let girls generation take you back in. Or just download the new Amy Diamond album:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzMCjibF8MMActually everyone should. It feels like a greatest hits of golden swedish made pop ten years ago. Should appeal to you fritz.

shit, had forgotten about that mix. she sounds nice there, you can riiide
I might be missing out on EXACTLY what quality from All I Need you're after.. but to my ears she does that rap singing on a lot of tracks.
..or is it the slightly deeper voice you're after? Generally more on the earlier albums. Or 'Extra Smooth' and 'Read Between the Lines' from s/t, though the songs are nothing like All I Need otherwise.

No, that was some random thread which evolved into four pages of discussion about Korean girl group Girls' Generation (SNSD) (which then inspired the Asian upload thread). Which fucked up the 'best of pop' singles list I had in my head for 2009.
