Ron casually watching porn in his car, buying a anime sexbot and then suggesting SoapLand is some real insane shit.

And then much later "the girl in front of me was masturbating and watching Game of Thrones. She was masturbating, not me"

feel like Fredrick Brennan is the exception to this but yeah, Ron getting that glint in his eye whenever he is asked about Q's identity is so telling

lots of talking heads of disgruntled significant others talking about their partners neglecting them in favor of a heated argument about whether or not dayton is better than boise.

this has been an enlightening 4 hours so far, as someone who hasn't delved into the 8chan backstory

jim watkins is an extremely disturbing man, his son doesn't seem much better. definitely seems like someone in that circle (or trump's circle) commandeered the Q persona in the middle of all this.

hard disagree, it avoids most of the tropes of modern streaming docs (overly dramatic interview sequences, obnoxious drone shots, flashy music cues, etc.)

re: last night's finale eps

so yeah ron (or ron + jim) were clearly the second iteration of Q, even before ron's whoopsie moment last night. the question of who the first Q was is almost less interesting since v2 really took the movement into the stratosphere/hellsphereToggle Spoiler

this was a fun watch but the degree to which Hoback makes himself a character was nauseating at times. kinda feel like Vice's pivot-to-video push last decade really did something permanently awful to mainstream documentary filmmaking

i'm 4 episodes in but hard agree with this: insufferable shit. outside of his desire to insert himself so blatantly in the narrative, it's otherwise been fascinating and yeah, most every person here is just comically unreal. its one of those documentaries where you are constantly being re-challenged for the person you dislike/detest the most. curious to see how the last 2 eps will play out

as for Fredrick I agree that he is by far the most (and frankly, only) sympathetic person in the series given his background. I'm not physically disabled by any means but the way he described what led him as a kid to 4chan really resonated with me, as his description of it being a place where no one is going to lie to you about what they think about your identifying traits is spot-on and frankly a big reason why a lot of anons have a tendency to be on the spectrum. plus, Fred was super young when he made 8chan and it's pretty obvious Jim took advantage of him when he lured Fred to his business operations.

I hope things have gotten better for Fred emotionally but it seems like the situation with 8chan really took a toll on him and he didn't have much of an emotional support base outside of the internet. I understand why he wanted to fuck Jim over, but trying to screw with his nationalization in the Philippines was a really stupid move and I wish there was someone who could have talked him out of doing that, as that decision came very close to ruining his life in an irreversible way.

i also think Ron Watkins is a textbook example of everything that can wrong when someone grows up with absolutely no maternal figure for guidance, unless that's what he gets out of his visits to Soapland lol

I hope Hoback appreciates how lucky he was to gain access to these people because they're by far the only thing carrying the series to any significance

the thing is the 'anons are more honest' attitude can horeshoe fast. i'm impressed that he was able to actually learn so much about human behavior this way. At least enough to make him as perceptive as he is. these are 'soft skills' you don't usually associate with digitally mediated social interactions.

idk, Q people kinda seem like they just want easy answers that abstract and obscure any role they have in it, other than the enlightened observer. the contrast between these things feels is strong.
