Longest gap between a film and its sequel

following the same character i should mention.

See i've been thinking maybe Top Gun: Maverick will hold that title? But i'm not sure. There will have been a 35 years gap. I can't think of another gap as wide between a movie and a sequel that followed the same character but maybe i'm blanking out on some stuff. Like sure they're thinking of making another Indy for example but there has been many films across the years between that first 1981 film and whatever new film they might come up with.

google tells me they made a mary poppins sequel a few years ago, so probably that

depending on how loose you are with 'following the same character,' blade runner

it's not the longest by any stretch i suppose but i feel like turning Death Wish into a franchise 8 years after the original film came out is a true indictments of the 80s lol

I feel like Milk wrote character but really meant actor playing the same character, so Poppins wouldn't count

Blade runner is closer, and although ford's appearance isn't a cameo, he's not the protagonist.

I think he's right that Top Gun is probably the longest gap with the trinity of character/actor/protag

Probably not same character, but they made a sequel to The Shining not so long ago.

Yeah i didn't mention but i feel another actor is also different. Still, Mary poppins can have some sort of title i suppose.

It's 35 years also.

MIND YOU.... Top Gun: MAverick WAS supposed to come out last year, and it would have then been 34 years. If they wait another year they can have the undisputed title. And i still think BR sorta counts even if DEckard is not in it a lot.

The Rise of Skywalker is technically a sequel to Star Wars, right? With multiple original characters appearing in both. That’s 42 years?

psycho 1 -> psycho 2 is 22 years, that feels like the longest gap prior to the top gun thing. anthony perkins in both. like with death wish it just feels like the start of turning old movies into franchises.

No you have to count ROTJ to Force awakens, that's 32 years.

There was a Maltese Falcon sequel released in 1975 with two of the actors from the original
