Questions of the day as asked to my HS classes

Humans in space suits make monkeys nervous

Postby Catullus » Thu Apr 29, 2021 7:03 am

So since the start of the year when we were doing live virtual classes (last year we ended the year doing asynchronous teaching), I started asking my students an ice breaker question for attendance. I didn't want to make them turn their cameras on (a LOT of equity issues with this and I'm just very opposed to making students do things that will make them really uncomfortable if not necessary), and I needed a way to confirm they were there for attendance so I started asking them these questions for them to answer. It's been a way for me to get to know them in a world where I don't see them face to face except a small number of them, and now it's like a part of the routine and they look forward to it. Every day they come in asking what the question is and they even send the question to their friends in other classes and it sparks discussion. I have a Zobmando book so some questions come from that or I have a few sites I take questions from or I make them up.

So anyway, I thought ya'll might want to get in on the action. Some of them get controversial. I'll put up the last few:

Would you rather be known as annoying or boring? (surprisingly 50/50 split)
If your house was on fire and you could only save one, would you rather save the family heirlooms/momentos or the family dog? (like 2 people out of 80 answered the unpopular side, you can guess which that was)
What did you want to be when you grew up when you were 5?

I do this too, cat! and i usually make them decision-based, like many of yours. i love the annoying/boring one.

i often make mine choices between two fantastical or extreme things. often it's whether they would 'give up' one thing or the other thing, forever...or have one power or another, forever...but sometimes it's much more mundane

it's also funny to see how different the ranges are between classes

really affirms the idea that classes take on unique collective personalities

It really is. There's definitely a dynamic in each one. Even among the same course but different periods the dynamic is very different. Like my two classes I repeat are Debate 1 and Law. The difference between period 4 Law (end of one rotation) and period 5 Law (first of the day) is huge, same with period 1 Debate 1 and period 6.

I like hearing them justify their answers lol. Sometimes the debate gets heated, I love it. One of the most controversial was: Would you rather live in a house made of cheese or one made of cookie dough? Kids were ANALYZING it

omg i'm stealing that

would you rather give up beaches forever, or mountains forever
would you rather give up jeans forever, or sneakers forever
would you wake up at 5am forever, for $10,000 (one class laughed in my face, and in another they all said yes)
would you rather be able to fly or to teleport

Definitely cheese because a hard cheese would be far more structurally stable. Although cookie dough would be an excellent insulator

the beach/mountain dilemma probably makes more sense in north carolina than in florida, lol

- boring (although this one is really good/interesting when you start to overthink it because of how certain personality types are coded as 'annoying' etc.)
- save the pets
- writer/author
- cookie dough house
- give up beaches forever
- give up jeans forever
- $10,000 to wake up at 5am yeah
- fly

Yeah these kids are like "mount..ains?"

The highest natural point in Florida is a sand dune in Jupiter (I've been on it!)

i've wished i could teleport many more times than i've wished i could fly, and i am assuming in this scenario that i can fly at the same speed i can run (maybe a little faster?) so it's not really a great method for traveling long distances... so maybe i should have stuck with teleportation. but at the same time, the feeling of flying... would be truly sick. although i guess you'd get used to it and take it for granted eventually...

whenever you see character flying superman-style in a movie they look like a total goofball imo
