for anyone interested, there have been some good eulogies from conan's podcast, daniel kellison telling stories on the bill simmons podcast, and bob saget here. seems not even his closest friends knew about his cancer diagnosis.

Norm texting Bob Saget “I love you” right before he died broke my heart.

this is how i account for david foster wallace being an outright physically abusive partner (eg pushing mary karr out of a moving vehicle) while he was drinking and (according to "bough down" - although i havent read all of it, i might be wrong) being a sweet and beloved husband while sober. the one addict in my immediate family is the sweetest person in the world now that they don't use but i sincerely thought during my adolescence that they were capable of killing me in my sleep. it's a wild thing that really challenges my understanding of human agency and willpower and i'm not quite sure how to think about it other than with sadness and perplexity

when my partner got home yesterday i was watching a clip of norm on letterman. she's a bit younger than me so she didn't really know who he was.

she was like, "oh is that norm macdonald?"

yeah, you hear he died?

"yeah, my mom mentioned it. she said he was a fucking asshole."

her mom was a director for broadcast TV.

she sat and watched it with me and when it was over she was like, "yeah, i guess my mom must have rubbed him the wrong way, he seems really pleasant!"

but it lines up with him being a great dude if you're a funny white guy, but if you're anything else (especially a smart, powerful woman) he went out of the way to make you miserable

i didn't listen to this, but judging by the pullquotes it seems to address some of what you're speculating about: https://www.1000dayssober.com/Norm%20MacDonald

Just watched all of his “norm has a talk show” on Netflix. Some really sweet moments with him and guests in it. Jane Fonda, drew Barrymore, Michael Keaton, letterman and his best friend Billy joe shaver

I added Me Doing Standup to the place earlier. It's my favorite standup of his. Hits kinda hard knowing he got cancer about a year later.

I’m still constantly watching Norm clips. Still destroying me. Don’t think any celeb death has fucked me up this much since Philip Seymour Hoffman.

other than this huge boff, believing he was "uneducated," and the headline, this article was actually good. in my opinion. norm was a person of faith, his faith was thoughtful, and i do think it defined a great deal of the last 10 years of his life.

Norm MacDonald was a Christian but his comedy was broadly nihilist and cynical. If he taught me anything as a teen it’s that everything was bullshit which made his wresting with faith in the last decade interesting to me even though our journey’s are not the same. How does someone who is thoroughly insincere and cynical approach belief when belief requires sincerity and hope. I dunno if that makes sense to anyone.

the urge among (usually conservative) christian writers to try to claim dead celebrities as christian is so fucking gross and bizarre

I mean being a conservative Christian may be synonymous with being a piece of shit but it’s not the only type of being a piece of shit. It’s like feminism may oppose rightwing Christianity, and rightwing Christianity might oppose feminism, but then there’s also a much broader aspect of patriarchy that is opposed to both of those things because they are constraints on dudes getting to cum whenever they want. If I had to guess more of the reactionary right in 2021 is comprised of white cum dudes who are also racists
