Ah yes, I definitely get that. I guess I just haven't been witness to any competition or infighting between the groups. Most of my interactions with other queer/acronym identifying people have just been one on one friendships, or like, a very small group of 3 or 4 people, that get together primarily because of working in the arts, and not in any sort of advocacy setting.

IMO it doesn't, I'm a binary trans woman so I wouldn't call myself genderqueer or whatever

I dont actually know whether I believe this opinion but my gut response is to say that I just think politicians should stop talking in generalizations about these populations full stop

Like what from the perspective of actual material politics does everyone with non normative gender or sexual identities have in common besides being like... the object of cruel reactionary discourse. The set of problems with the medicalization of gender that an intersex person has seems to have little to do with like, marriage rights or whatever, idk

Say queer or lgbtqia+ when you're talking about a club or something but otherwise idk man just fix fuckin healthcare and legalize sex work and make it easier for people to leave abusive partners and stuff. Idk. Hitting submit on this for some reason

Trying to think if there's a word I earnestly like to use to describe my gender or sexuality that I don't adopt purely out of convenience...idk nothing comes to mind

if you watch that vice thing (understandable if you'd rather not) you'll see at one point the moderator asks who identifies with LGBTQ+ and not a single person gives more that a "so-so" affirmative. I don't know that any of these umbrella terms are meant to be something you "identify" with but are simply descriptors. accepting this label has a purpose isn't in opposition to Identifying with a more specific term or terms; I identify as bi but I don't have any problems with LGBTQIA[...] (aside from the awkwardness and exclusion inherent to the construct) or queer (aside from the way this term is overloaded; see lack of clarity itt) -- assuming they are used in a context where it makes sense to group all these disparate tendencies together, which context of course only exists in response to the systems of oppression that thus group them

as usual, co-sign what alaska said

I was reading this last night:

"Furthermore, some are unsure whether they identify or qualify as GQ, so they
turn to the subreddit for clarification, asking questions such as “How do I know if
I’m femme presenting nonbinary or just regular ol bisexual cisgender?” and “Am I
Genderqueer? PleaseHelp!” The general consensus is that anyone who feels uncomfortable
with binary identity categories is nonbinary by default; however, whether or
not that makes them GQ is a matter of debate. This is because “genderqueer” is but
one of the several popular nonbinary identity categories/labels; others that members
invoke include agender, aliagender, androgynous, bigender, demigirl/demiguy,
genderfluid, genderflux, genderfuck, gender variant, intergender, neutrois, polygender,
and pangender. While some maintain that the different nuances matter,
others understand these subcategories of nonbinary gender identity to be essentially
interchangeable; therefore, they identify with multiple labels simultaneously
(Kuper et al. 2012)."

i think it is important to understand that identity and the words we use to self-identify are very important for some and it does not surprise me that some are resistant to using a word that has historically been used as a slur or derogatorily.

“If I Told You” focuses on a suppressed homosexual coming out to his friend—Joyner takes the perspective of the gay man coming out while Eminem takes the perspective of his unsupportive Christian friend. The encounter leads the homosexual man to commit suicide, ultimately giving Em’s character feelings of regret. It also ends in a twist, as Eminem’s character reveals that he’s also gay.

As a lawyer, I've stumbled over "LGBTQ2+" a few times in submissions. It's much easier to write than to say.
