I once saw William Gibson give a fascinating talk on menswear - he talked about how "operator style" was going to become the norm for dudes in their 40s-60s aka ball cap, oakleys, polo, cargo shorts, hiking shoes, beard all giving off a CIA/DEEPSTATE vibe...I think that really did happen! (this was like 2007)
After the talk I saw he was wearing an acronym jacket and in true nerd styleI was all "is that a J-2B1?" and he got stoked I recognized it. We talked about this half baked idea of habitus informed by fashion, like the idea of giving soldiers a pair of pants cut in such a manner as to cause them to march 2% faster....
Anyway, techwear shit is expensive. A lot of people who buy this stuff are deep in IT world in my experience. It also retains its value very well (barring fabric that degrade over time), so you can kind of "trade up" over time and not be 10k in clothing debt. Like Acronym in particular will trade hands over and over until it's unwearable. I've owned a third arm that I sold for what I paid for it. I want it back though I want another...Third Arm.
It's all tied back to how in Pattern Recognition, the protagonist has a perfect black MA-1 jacket made by them, and then they were like "hey cool let's manifest that reality". I highly recommend that trilogy if you're interested in this stuff!

What is it that makes something tactical? Is it the camo?
