my partner's parents just gave us a Capresso grinder as a present. been using a hario hand grinder for the last 4 years. pretty excited not to spend the first 5 minutes of every morning hand grinding my beans.
I also went from my few years old hario grinder to a Eureka Mignon that i got for half the hefty retail price, and outside of the time gain, my coffee is also much better, less bitter, more crema, i'm really happy. I use a Rancilio Silvia so i need a find ground coffee.

so i have decided to buy a baratza encore as i do not have a grinder and want to start trying a variety of beans. right now i have a moka pot but also want to get something else to make coffee. what should i get:
an aeropress
a chemex
a nice drip machine
or any other recommendations?
i was leaning towards a chemex but the downside is that i would also have to get a nice scale and a gooseneck kettle which would significantly increase how much i have to spend.

Hario v60
They have rip-off gooseneck kettles at Walmart for like $10
Digital scale isn't really necessary but they've got $7 ones on amazon

yeah just need a dedicated scoop for the beans and you can be consistent and adjust to your preference pretty easily. if yr doing pour over, the harios usually come w a little scoop, or just use a measuring cup.

there's no reason not to invest in a scale if you're doing pour over and serious about dialing it in

if the added cost of a scale is gonna push u away from pour over, i think that's a good reason. it's not like having a scale guarantees quality either. it's all dependent on your ability to taste the difference and care to know how to adjust your specs. but honestly once you know them, they don't differ wildly over time. it's not espresso.

i agree that scales don't guarantee quality, but they do guarantee a finer degree of consistency during the brew process itself which is absolutely necessary for using methods like kasuya's 4:6.
if you're just going to be eyeballing your pour overs and cost is a major concern, i think a french press would be a much better/less finicky option for reliably producing a serviceable cup. but brent already decided to invest in an encore so i can't see how a $10 scale would be out of his price range. (obviously the "nicer" ones like the acaia pearl are v exorbitantly priced)

i can appreciate the consistency argument but i don't think the priority difference between french press and pour over is ease. they're both pretty easy to me. and i think french press has a lot of idiosyncrasies like oily brew and the brew sits in the grinds effectively changing the flavor over time if it's not consumed right away... seems like there's a lot of preference that comes into either method.

yeah the main difference to me isn't ease, it's more how forgiving each method is. v60 can be pretty unforgiving if you misalign your parameters imo, but it's probably a different story for chemex/kalita wave/etc
fwiw i'm not a huge fan of immersion brewing in general and don't think french presses ever really make "amazing" cups or extract as much nuance as i would like out of high quality beans

brent, consider the Hario Woodneck (aka nel drip). It rips.

Try your local target for beans. Ours carries stumptown and Tony's and the Tony's is $5 for 12oz which is insane considering that they sell it for $13 on their website and it's $11 in other places around town

I started ordering from Happy Mug recently and it finally feels like a sustainable way to drink fresh coffee. $9/12oz or $20/32oz and $3 shipping. It's solid and the 32oz bag is perfect since we use exactly a pound per week.

Anyways if you’re dropping money on an Encore you should go ahead and get the gooseneck and scale. Scales can be gotten for pretty cheap in my opinion, you don’t have to get an Acaia or something. I use the Kalita wave for my pourovers right now and love it.

seems like a real catch-22
i've been using a scrump pour-over setup my whole life (it's what my parents used) and every morning i tell myself i'm gonna pour carefully. then about 30 seconds in i give up and dump a bunch of water over the grounds.
there is a noticeable taste difference with a good pour however, even with mediocre grounds.

I've ordered a lot from them over the past few years but I feel like the quality isn't always great. You get what you pay for basically, prices and shipping are cheap.

Any particular recommendations? I have only tried a couple so far. The Guatemalan is my keeper so far.
