I've had my Chemex 5 years now, used at least once daily it's awesome. Divided by the number of cups I've had the cost is totally worth it. I've got a V60 and aeropress which mostly gather dust now. Chemex is good for the volume, each morning I make a brew and my partner and I drink it on the way into work.

Being stuck in my house literally all the time now finally inspired me to try making actual good coffee at home instead of just buying crap out all the time. Bought a Baratza Encore grinder and Behmor Brazen Plus, feel like a total novice but still managed a decent pot of coffee tonight using the free Willoughby's beans I got with the machines.

Any recommendations for good sites to buy beans? Excited to experiment lots with this stuff.

Onyx is doing free shipping over $25 rn so I splurged and got their sampler.

Coava, Verve, Equator, Nossa Familia, Crema, Ceremony, and Ruby are also doing free shipping for the virus, among others.

There were some thoughts here that coffee roasters would be able to continue during the lockdown, this turned out to not be the case. Very glad I stocked up on 4 250 gram bags plus the bag I already had when the lockdown started.

The downside though is being home all day means I'm drinking more home coffee and no work coffee.

i switched to black tea cus it's cheaper. been pretty cool to not drink coffee all the time and i think my kidneys and body probably appreciate it...also now the occasional cup is way more satisfying.

BUT i miss the ritual of brewing with my pour over. I use tea bags right now but I guess I could get into HQ loose leaf? But I know it's just not the same.

My gf bought me a nespresso and I love it, even though I know it's not the best cup I could make at home, it's the easiest pretty good coffee I could get. I do try to take coffee breaks when I am off of work or on vacation. I generally stick to 2-3 cups a day, which is pretty good considering my addictive personality.

Gahh, I have been subscribing to Trade for a year or so now and I think Onyx is my absolute fav. Both bags I got from them were amazing and totally different profiles.

Got a bag from Ritual and drank a full "pot" (25 oz) on my bonavita drip today and felt good and truly awake for the first time in weeks (baby teething). Really balanced brew. Shit ripped.

I don't think Trade is an amazing service matching wise (it's fine, just not especially nuanced/sophisticated), but they have lots of good roasters, let you override their picks for whatever you want, and it's pretty reasonable/really fast shipping. If anyone is interested in a free first bag, here's my referral link: http://s.trdcfe.me/NpQ6q

I will say though, my wife only does espresso on a Flair machine and I do aeropress/drip/french press depending on how i'm feeling. they're pretty good at providing coffees that are versatile if you need it.

Trade is good, yeah. I think they're my favorite non-roaster subscription service, though MistoBox is right up there.

any recommendations for a reasonably-priced manual burr grinder?

my (non-manual) krups finally gave up after 9 years or so of pretty solid use, couldn't keep up with the increased demand during quarantine i guess

might just buy another one of those but kind of like the idea of putting some elbow grease into it

idk if ive ever encountered a manual burr grinder that WASNT actually physically uncomfortable to use despite best design efforts. especially depending on your brew method/grind needs. Tho also freeze my beans bc I try not to drink coffee every day (and failing lately), so they’re a little tougher to do by hand.

I like the basic mrCoffee electric burr grinder well enough. I don't keep the hopper super full tho, just enough to help the flow of beans into the grinder

edit: for typo that totally inverted the meaning of my post...

70g is a lot of coffee to grind by hand. Way too much imo. I would get a cramp lol.

I’m sorry nathan but that sounds like it would not yield consistent grain size.
