My experience:
- Vaguely remember watching WWF before it got renamed
- Watched the Tiger Mask anime

The Tiger Mask anime from like 2-3 years ago? That was all set in New Japan, so maybe you'd know some of their folks, in which case there is a wealth of absolutely terrific stuff there.

That said: yes, AEW is just getting going and probably pretty easy to catch up on. There's kind of various levels of engagement you can have with it, from watching all of their additional content (much of it pretty good) to watching their 4-5 shows previous to their TV show starting to just probably watching tonight and likely being able to vaguely follow it?

In terms of good quality WWE content, there's also NXT, which regularly presents a more interesting product than the 'main roster'. In theory, it's the trainees show but they've been bringing in top level indie wrestlers for years now and they're mixed in and the featured acts.

Do you have any specific fond memories and/or reasons for wanting to get into it? It might make it easier to tailor what might work for ya...

I would go with AEW if: you enjoyed fun, innovative matches, basic old school stories and a little goofy stuff
I would go with NXT if: you enjoyed fun matches based on a pretty basic formula, old school stories and a little less goofy stuff
I would go with New Japan if: you're most interested in high quality matches, albeit in a slightly different style than you might be used to, with stories that tend to build, more often than not, more through matches than through skits or promos
I would go with WWE if: you want a lot of goofy bullshit with repetitive and slightly frustrating matches albeit with many talented wrestlers

Also: women's wrestling is ascendant in all of these but New Japan. Seems useful to note if your last experience with wrestling was late 90s/early 2000s.

One Cornette point that I've heard him make on his pod (which I find fascinating from time to time but basically listen to 3 episodes, remember he's kind of a POS eventually and stop, then come back 2-3 months later, because he is interesting to listen to) is that the way that folks like Omega and the Bucks often plan their matches has a tendency to leave them doing dives to whatever side of the ring they happen to be on and feels most natural but this causes a) the camera to miss some of the dives and b) (as in this case) the dive to often be done to a part of the ringside area where there isn't enough room.

That dive would have been much safer done onto the ramp side of the ring.

I was a little miffed that they obvious, not hard to grasp 'Omega is attempting to show he's Moxley's equal and can do anything he can do' story (wherein he challenged Janela to this match to match Moxley's match with the same stips) was not told, instead the announcers wondered about why he'd want to do a match like this. I just think it'd have been much richer if they'd told the story better on commentary?

Main event was pretty meh, tbh. The internal logic of the rope breaks were weird - you can do rope breaks in a no DQ match - just say that a match cannot end with someone in the ropes but that you can't be DQ'ed for continuing a move while in the ropes. And instead they made Ref Aubrey look weird by counting him out and chastizing him in the ropes - could have worked it better.

The hands tied behind his back spots were a bit much, also. It also seems like the tag match probably went long - it was like a 10 minute main event and the end of the show felt rushed. Hager rescuing him was something that was useful, I suppose, to establish but it still felt like a flat finish... how was it not a push off the ropes into a Judas Effect, also - that'd have looked like a million bucks done right.

Mox/PAC vs Page/Omega was great but the weird extreme leniency for DQ's in AEW is pretty odd and hard to figure out. I realize it might have been a cold way to end the segment and there were a few other reasons not to go for a DQ but then neither man should have struck the other with their object. Still - I can't complain and the episodic storytelling to get us to Moxley/Pac next week was pretty great.

I might not have started the show off with a partner substitution if I had a shoot sub later in the night but I imagine they had that pretty specifically planned. Was surprised when SCU didn't end up costing the Lucha Bros their match, seemed like the obvious way to go. Maybe they would have with Luchasaurus but they didn't want the Stunt/Jungle Boy team to advance? Either way, not a fan of the fact that we're likely getting Private Party vs Dark Order as the finals of the tournament. I would imagine Private Party wins because lord, they can't have confidence in their absolute biggest dud act thus far getting their tag titles, can they?

Looks like 'Full Gear' is shaping up though:

Jericho/Cody for the title
Omega/Moxley (No DQ of some sort)
Tag Title Tournament Finals (likely Private Party vs Dark Order)
Young Bucks vs the former LAX
SCU vs Lucha Bros

Maybe Hager vs Page or Dustin?
Something with Pac, you'd imagine? Something for MJF? Jurassic Express?
Women's title defense? Bea vs Britt?

I could see Guevara vs Allin, which would be awesome.

I guess, come to think of it, with your hands tied behind your back, being legit spinning elbowed out of the air would, uh, suck. So fair enough.

Haven't seen the match results but the next AEW Dark card is:

Nyla vs Librarian Leva Bates
Janela vs Cutler
Bucks & The Rhodes Bros vs Strong Hearts (CIMA and one of his Chinese students) & Private Party

If I had to come up with the coolest possible wrestler I'd pretty much just be Darby Allin. His name is a combination of two punk icons, he's also goth, he's a skater, skull face paint, tats and he's hardcore. The most counterculture wrestler ever.
Stabbing me 11 times only pissed me off.

AEW and NXT both had... interesting ends.

They needed to do a draw somewhere important to sell the threat of it, but I don't know that this was the time and they telegraphed it a bit.

And... Balor. Interesting.

He also made a really pointed criticism of Jay Lethal and claimed him as the only black star ROH was ever willing to push, saying he was an Uncle Tom. Between that and Taylor Hendrix saying he propositioned her and then got her fired when she refused a year or so back, Jay Lethal feels like one of those guys who might have some skeletons yet to be unearthed.

In other news: Dynamite did more viewers this week than Smackdown. Lots of variables in play, biggest being that Smackdown was moved to FS1 and was against night 2 of the NBA and the second game of the World Series, but still...
