yeah, I really like the PS3 for media. I'm not really a big time gamer so I bought it initially for BD and streaming stuff, for which it performs well, minus the lack of MKV support.
You're gonna want to look into this:
http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/ (supports MKV streaming)

I assume MP4, until the nerds figure out a hack to install something else on it like boxee or plex. I figure it won't take long.

It's awesome. Make sure you get the most recent beta as it's very stable and has some features not in the official release. The older ones you had to transcode the MKV on your computer and quality dropped if you didn't have a very fast machine. With the new one, it just streams without transcoding and looks great. Only complaint is some newer MKV files don't have audio when played, it's a bug that will hopefully be fixed soon.

There's also MKV2VOB which transcodes to mp4. I use that on the mkv's I download just cause (hate queuing up a movie to find it doesn't work), but yeah, ps3 media server was the reason I built a new desktop.

While a streaming client like the app Plex just released seems entirely feasible, I don't think I'd hold my breath waiting for a full XBMC variant to be ported to a computer running on an A4.

it's also better. the touch is a piece of shit. plus, only the cheapest touch is less than the classic and i'd rather have a 160 gb classic than an 8gb touch.

PS3 dudes: you can also convert .mkv to .vob or whatever and play them just fine. I use this:

Ordered a 27 inch iMac last night for the new apartment and grabbed a 2nd generation iPod Touch (32 GB) for $100 (after rebate) as part of the back to school promotion.

They need to separate iTunes into different applications, it does way too many things now
