meh, that's like 5% average gradient... 47/19 gearing would be pretty much ideal

The descents would suck though

hell yeah. 8-)

even though i've only ever said it out loud to talk about photographs, i first learned the word from a HUM song:

You swore the earth was round
And you said that there was no upside down
I hit the starship left and let the parallax flip
Like you showed me in the lighthouse
I did the math and it came up ones and 0's

One of my biking buds just met the end of their riding days. My friend was diagnosed with arterial stenosis six months ago and was told to cease any serious exercise. Of course he didn’t listen, putting in like 250 miles a week.

Yesterday, a mile into a ride, he passed out after a cardiac event and shattered his pelvis, arm, and collarbone. Fuuuuuuck. Imagine having that happen and then also knowing you’ll never really ride again. And be in the hospital during these times.

that sucks. you'd hope all that riding would prevent the heart stuff.

hopefully he can recover enough to like cruise the neighborhood on an e-bike or something

I never posted about it, but about a year ago I was on a group ride with somebody died of a heart attack mid ride.

We all came to stop at the bottom of the hill and he was just kind of slumped over his handlebars and when he hit a slight dip, his front wheel went sideways and he just smashed straight down to the ground.

We called paramedics and did CPR. No pulse or breathing without compressions. For a few minutes we thought the crash is what made him go lights out, but when we realized he wasn't going that fast, everyone finally put together that he must have been dead before even hit the ground. A couple people took a week or so off the bike because it felt too weird, but after we talked about it for a bit, we realized that if there's any way to die, doing it in the middle of a descent is probably one of the best ways. I mean, he never even had to gain back all the elevation...

it can happen to even highly trained athletes. Hank Gathers is the one everyone knows about. Ryan Shay is a more recent example from the running world, he dropped dead in the middle of the Olympic Marathon Trials a few years back:

He was really hammering on the hills too, he consistently beat all the other older guys (~65 or so) up every hill that day. People were asking what got into him all morning.

Definitely overdid it today, easily my biggest ride since the coronavirus hit, but was feeling great and weather’s perfect in the mid-60s and low 70s. Ready to slam a pizza in an hour or so

I got out with the spd setup for the first time today

Not bad! Getting out is easy enough, I found getting in harder but I'm starting to get it.

After a half hour ride my knee hurt some and I read about adjusting the cleats and just finished that. So we'll see how it goes

I ended up with pearl izumi tour road shoes and they're comfortable and no feeling of focused pressure in any one spot which is good.

I greased up the pedal spindles but I am having this little tick sound on every revolution. This isn't new to these pedals, so I figure it's the bottom bracket needing grease but I don't have a tool. :x

i harp on this cuz it helped me a lot.

we tend to assume our gait is summetrical but it rarely is.

sit on a table with your legs dangling off the edge and note where you toes point. that should be your cleat angle

in my case, my right points quite a bit further out than my left. when i fixed that, and really fine tuned it, i got rid of my knee pain completely

Cool. I moved them inboard to move my feet out some, because this was definitely narrower than before, and I adjusted the angle a little. My right foot does turn out a little more so I'll see about adjusting that one further. I did like tiny tiny angle changes bc I'm not sure how much is enough, figure I can continue to tweak them

I also raised my saddle about 2-3 mm because it did feel like my legs weren't extending quite as much as usual and I figured that's because the cleat is like raised up off the spindle more than my old pedals.

ha i think i mentioned it once but i switched cleat types on a race day once and didnt think to compensate for change in stack height with saddle type and it WRECKED my back.

when i raced i was so fussy about fit.

These bottom bracket tools are gonna wreck my bank account

Mostly how are you supposed to properly torque this shit? Do I need like a $100 torque wrench? My existing one was already $40 but it's not heavy duty enough for these torque specs

Any recs for cheap road bike wheel sets? I mean CHEAP. I’m trying to fix up an old bike for my girlfriend and the wheels are completely fucked. Would usually just hit up the bike scrapyard for this, but I guess that’s not really an option these days

i am a big fan of riding with a minitool and tweaking kn rhe go.

my rules are only tweak one thing at a time and unless its glaringly wrong/painful, give it at least 15 minutes to see if it works
