All these games should have transfers. Being penalised just because a guy abandoned is terrible for a three-week race.

Starting with three sprinters and then transferring one out for a climber after 9 of the first 12 stages looking pretty sprint-y doesn't seem that much of a big deal either.

i'm cool with the subs.

but it just kinda sullies the idea of "assembling a team", imo

DS's don't get to grab the next best GC guy when their leader crashes out.

btw, i mentioned earlier that i'm back near the mountains again.

at age 38 and weighing 15 lbs more than i did when i was racing... i was less than a minute off my PR for an hour long climb i did on tuesday, and missed my PR for a 4 and a half mile (~7km) 7% climb by only 7 seconds just now!!

35 mile ride today, my longest ever by a wide margin. I climbed Old La Honda (the reference climb in our area) and got absolutely E V I S C E R A T E D by a guy who was at least 60 years old.

New sports are fun!

i'm so old and fat.

i'm torn between seeing old pictures of myself when i was roadie anorexic and being sort embarrassed that i'm not fit anymore and remembering that i wasn't actually very happy back then and actually had MORE daily anxiety about diet and calorie counting and appearance. (and also knowing that getting in more exercise was a useful stress management tool)

i don't really see myself getting back into distance cycling (my nerve for riding on county roads and/or in groups is totally shot after a couple of race crashes and organizing too many ghost bike vigils.

can we make this the bike and kayaking thread

I was kinda freaked out by the descent on Woodside Road, too many cars, too fast. A few kids at school had parents killed up there on their bikes. Not sure I want to do that again.

I could also stand to lose about 30 pounds. Unfortunately my mind still behaves like I'm in super-fit running shape and writes the odd check it can't cash

i really love riding still.

after a decade plus in colorado with its massive, fast grid, being back in urban traffic with busses and delivery scooters and traffic is really exhilarating. i learned to commute in chicago and thats the style of commuting that makes me happiest, that eyes in the back of your head, splitting gaps shit. cuz even though theres more going on, the traffic is all going slowly so even if you get hit its (generally) less likely to be fatal.

i wish there were more people riding here. our mode share is abysmal, which in a place with the topography of Honolulu is indefensible, but i think we're gonna improve on the coming years.

where i lost my nerve is that like county road riding where youre either on a narrow shoulder or taking the lane with 35-50mph traffic barreling past.

I used to just be able to put in headphones and ignore the close passes and felt pretty confident and then had a few cyclists deaths on streets i'd felt safe on previously, and got more involved with advocacy and lost all nerve for that.

I did a weeklong hiking/camping trip basically along tomorrow’s stage 20 years ago ending in Colmar before heading home across the Rhein to Freiburg. The memories are gonna be fierce.

Ineos were coming in and wanted the best team possible at the Tour, but they couldn't just pull him out a week before the race because of appearance fees and all that. So he 'broke' his 'collarbone'.

Got it. Yeah, the times he had on Strava right after the broken collarbone definitely didn't look like it had slowed him down at all

makes you wonder about Froome then, doesn't it? especially with those hospital photo tweets where he doesn't have a scratch on him anywhere after having "one of the worst crashes of all-time".
he does not believe an adequate safety margin was built into the Alpine Slide

I thought CT did a nice job debunking the Froome Dauphiné conspiracy https://cyclingtips.com/2019/06/the-weekly-spin-putting-chris-froome-crash-conspiracy-theories-into-context/ Time will tell.
