I can't tell you how much I've been looking forward to this release but ultimately disappointed with the lack of studio outtakes. For someone who obsessively followed Ed's diaries, I was really looking forward to hearing Pulled Apart By Horses, Bombers, Up the Ladder, Keep the Wolf from the Door, and etc. Of course, the bulk of those songs have come out in some shape or form over the years, but I would have loved to hear how they were being put together back then.

Reckoner being born from Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses back when it was a Radiohead song they were trying to work out is definitely one of the more interesting recording process tidbits.

do you think they recorded anything of "feeling pulled apart by horses" for these sessions, though? i always figured it was born from touring these records. i can't remember if ed ever mentioned it in his diaries but i want to say no?

but yeah early "bombers" and "up on the ladder" would've been nice, unless what we got as "4 minute warning" is just "bombers" as it was recorded for kid a. probably not, though

yeah I have spent 20 years hoping for the reggae optimistic, and I dunno, gimme four hours, four hours of studio early versions, maybe a multimedia extravaganza that lets you read ed's diary and then you can listen to the take he mentions from that particular day, full on greenplastic messageboard manic radiohead fantasy nerddom here

but it looks like we won't get it

and god people are happy with I dunno half an hour of offcuts half of which are probably just instrumental interludes in the vein of mk1 and mk2

anyway I spent sixty pounds on the art book and the words book BUT I WILL NOT PAY FOR THE MP3S

I feel like at some stage someone from the band said that they had a vault of unreleased material from this era and that they had an exciting way of releasing it, but maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps I set my expectations too high after the Ok Computer reissue with the tape that they'd release something similar or even bigger. I still haven't even bought any of the Kid A mnesia merch yet.

And the offcuts will probably be scraps of sound. Two of the tracks are just string arrangements and even the other version of Fast Track is under 2 minutes I believe. Wasn't Last Flowers at this stage renamed 'Cogs' and was instrumental?

my disappointment isn't so intense, but i was definitely a little put off by the total lack of acknowledgement of the "i might be wrong" live recordings, let alone inclusion of any other tracks from those concerts. especially baffling after all of the youtube dumps

potential bummers revealed in this review: Follow Me Around is just a 'solo acoustic guitar rendering' of the song, and the Pyramid and HTDC 'strings' tracks are just that - isolated tracks of the strings from the songs - and nothing more. :(

Kid Amnesiae deets from The Times UK:

The original Amnesiac, for instance, has a song called Like Spinning Plates; four minutes of digitally-reversed music, like wind escaping through a car window, with Yorke’s distorted voice. It evokes a mood, but, live, Yorke played a gorgeous piano take. On the newly released version those two streams join — piano and sonic mush — and the result is stunning.

The omission of this beautiful song from the original album shows a band hellbent on challenging what people thought they were. The same can be said of another new version, Pulk/Pull (True Love Waits Version), a rendition of the most extreme electronic song on Amnesiac, but with the classic Radiohead piano ballad True Love Waits sung over the top.

The best bonus is a studio version of Follow Me Around, a live song sung for so long it once had a line about Tony Blair. It is guitar-led and mid-paced, with a soaring chorus; alien to Yorke at the turn of the century when he said: “I’d completely had it with melody.”

The Blair line has gone, with the lyrics now focusing on Yorke’s own dread. That angst is, to many, Radiohead in a nutshell, but so much of Kid A was about abstract lyrics. Follow Me Around was too direct. “Nowadays, I get panicked/ I ceased to exist,” he sings.
