this might be a wildly dumb thought, but i wonder if netflix is trying to see US interest in F1 with the show to test the viability of live streaming it in US region

I have been enjoying the Netflix series. It does a good job of telling the human stories from last season. But I have to say that I'm a little disappointed in the total disregard for the technical side of the sport. I get that teams probably don't want a focus on that, but it's just as important. Show some of the design and manufacturing processes. The ridiculously sophisticated systems that go into managing the car on track. The bespoke gear they use in the pitlanes. Even give us some official propaganda about the engine tech's alleged environmental benefits. That shit is so cool and poorly understood by Americans. The show doesn't give much context for why the stakes are so high, that it's dramatic because everything, not just the drivers, is on the bleeding edge.

I've watched six eps so maybe it's coming, but it doesn't seem that way.

I realize they're stitching together a narrative here, but some of the presentation feels detached from reality. I get the impression Ricciardo gave the crew more access than Max, but it seems disingenuous to talk about Ricc's chances in Austria before the DNF when in reality Max was comfortably ahead all weekend and won the race in very convincing form. Obviously I carry my own biases, but I don't see the need to push an agenda to make Danny Ric the hero. He's clearly one of the most likable, sincere people on the grid. I love Max as a competitor, but I'm not sure I'd ever want to have a beer with him.

Guenther Steiner cussing up a storm is great though, more of that please

To me Steiner came off as the most relatable character and one I enjoyed watching the most. I didn’t know who he was before the show and after I’ve become a haas fan. I also have a soft spot for grosjean because he reminds me of how unpredictable my sim racing careers have been. One minute in taking pole position and the next I’m spinning out in turn one of the race.

I wish the technical stuff had been covered more too. Thy don’t even go over formation laps!

I hope they’re filming again this season. Also agree it seems like Ricciardo was most accessible and that kinda made him a bit of a star.

I still wish there was some Arrivabene clips. That dude seems like such a caricature.

It it even possible to cast a longer shadow over a sport than he did? Running the show for over 20 years. What a loss.

Here was a pretty good analysis from testing - https://f1metrics.wordpress.com/2019/03/11/2019-preseason-analysis/

Seems like everything after Red Bull is going to be close and changeable. Hope Alfa come out on top.

Anyone having issues with the ESPN stream? I'm trying to watch the FP2 replay and it's single digits FPS on multiple devices, pretty much unwatchable. Doesn't seem to be my internet connection.

The F1TV feed is bad, too. My guess is the Australian internet is fucking this up for everyone else.

DWB messaged me last night to ask if I was seeing the black star image that was covering the entire screen for a good portion of the beginning of FP1, but that was limited to the Sky/ESPN feed

But yeah, both practices thus far have been not good, stream wise

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The midfield is so tight that it seems like who gets into Q3 will just be a question of who's running last in track order
