I really love this album but I'm not sure anything quite reaches the highs of songs like So Close to Paradise, Minneapolis Belongs to You, Andreja-4-Ever, Omamori, and the Sa Sa Samoa remix. The synth arrangements on those first two are some of the coolest I've ever heard

not totally sure i agree but one of the really nice things about this is that it has me remembering how much i loved the ruin-era elite gymnastics stuff. i used to listen to minneapolis belongs to you on loop while at my job freshman year in college

[re: checking in with the old gang] i haven’t seen a lot of mention of that track as a standout but it’s lyrically perfect, with complicated emotions spoken plainly. it has a driving momentum to it and it feels like every new section of the song comes in at exactly the right moment.

Totally feel that. To me, RUIN sounds like the perfect soundtrack to an incredible skateboarding video, and I guess I must like that sort of music more than anything, because I love when music causes me to imagine doing boardslides

i was actually thinking this same thing.

it's hard to say how much of the record is brooks coping with the breakup. i know the majority of these songs have been kicking around for years as demos on his soundcloud. it's pretty cool to see how far they've come, especially songs that had several demos like "checking in with the old gang." i also wanted to echo what other people have said about that song being a perfect song. i played the shit out of both versions of the demo and have gotten really attached to it in a weird way. it just nails this kinda indescribable bittersweet feeling that i can't totally put my finger on. it's like this kinda heartbreaking portrait of trying to find love like after your 20s are over and things are weird and hard and things haven't really panned out like you thought they would.

it's also really nice to see the board loving this record. i remember people really slamming magical pessimism around here back when i was lurking and i still love that record so much. i read on his tumblr like years ago that "words with friends" is written from the perspective of one of his exes and is basically about how crummy of a boyfriend he was to her. after learning that, that song really messed me up and still does!
