yeah "sophie" owns. i loved the mp 2014 version, but i've really warmed to the new version, too.

this pitchfork review is actually great

"There’s little precedent for this kind of songwriting happening over jungle rhythms."

I realized this morning that black pill skyline is essentially a modern day Glen Campbell song

on Black Pill Skyline: I see he's citing Dylan but what immediately came to mind is I'm Wide Awake It's Morning (for the vocals), and in particular Lua (for the lyrics).

i must do as my capo commands

From like 2004 to 2006 he was an early board republican and comic book nerd and then at some point he wrote a lot of long entertaining posts about doing blow in Minneapolis and he then did RUIN. And then he dated Grimes. Not a bad arc all told.

reading j brooks posts from like 2011 was one of the big reasons I ended up boarding here. That curiouscat q&a kind of reminded me of that and it''s refreshing hear that voice again kind of rescuing some of the better ideas and stuff from that time, copyright violation and experimentation and sampling

Yea he was always a good poster, someone you always read even if or when he was being annoying or melodramatic. It's not really a stretch to think of DG as based on the proposition What if Good Posts were Songs. In one sense this is very literal since Postcard from a Minneapolis Scammer felt like reading a JB post. But as other people and probably he I think have said, the music itself is grounded in a kind of Free For All pre-corporate internet ethos

i will say that i have fallen into the trap of thinking about this album in the context of their relationship, but i ultimately decided that's not fair. like nobody knows anything about the interior of that relationship and anyway writing breakup songs doesn't necessarily mean you're heartbroken.

i do agree that grimes stuff sucks these days lol

basically this is the jump in quality I felt between the first ep -> Ruin

like there was some good stuff in the early DG work, but this is like such an amazing amount of growth. I honestly had to stop and think like, "wait how many covers are on this" cause so many just are just so full and excellent in so many ways.
