in pilsen i've eaten at la vaca, dusek, and skylark. what else should i be hitting up?

for tacos: atotonilco, sabor y sazon, el milagro

other good food: carnitas uruapan, jibarito stop, pleasant house pub, birrieria reyes de ocotlan, a place by damao, yvolina's tamales

alulu for beer. pretty sure there are some other good breweries in the area too but haven't been

pilsen community books and open books are good bookstores

yea i second all these recs. alulu is great when they dont have events up stairs. don’t let the construction deceive you, they are always open and the vibe is great.

robyn was insane

hung out at bottom lounge for the evacuation, got some high lifes and pinball matches in, not too shabby

fest highlights:

charli, robyn, low, parquet courts, freddie gibbs, jeremih, black midi, $6 slices of connie's pizza

the ric wilson & amen dunes aftershows were also great

galena was the most boring fucking place I've been in my life when I met up w/ my folks there, but seems like it could be a cute spot for a couples getaway I guess depending on what you're looking for. I didn't find anything interesting about the landscape, it's just a buncha cute little shops in a cute little historic town

castle rock state park/lowden state forest are pretty nice, still a bit boring by my standards but I'm from minnesota so admittedly spoiled by natural beauty. I was camping so can't comment on the towns in the area

yea my memory of Galena is being a kid with my parents getting dragged into endless antique stores

if youre gonna do a getaway in the summer might as well make it along the lake IMO

if you dont mind stretching your drive time going to the UP is the way to go, although thats better as a 2-3 night thing or more. hitting the boreal forests up there and perceptively feeling the transition away from standard midwest landscape into something more wild and foreign is worth the extra effort.

Yeah, camping would be more my game but I think for this particular impulse trip we're not ready to camp (no one really owns the right stuff for an overnight, at the moment.)

my thing is im itching for natural landscape type stuff, but it doesn't need to be a primitive escape (yet) so much as something erring on less commercial/suburban. A decent trail or river would be amazing. Idk if my companions want to get too athletic lol but i wouldn't mind.

warren dunes in Michigan is just a bit farther and a little less crowded. there’s also tons of breweries around there.

New Glarus + House on the Rock is a really awesome roadtrip you can knock out in a weekend. Dodge State park might be the most picturesque part of Wisco

probably too far for a day trip, but i really want to go down to shawnee national forest and see garden of the gods. I also want to see cave-in-rock state park and learn more about the history of pirates and bandits on the ohio river.

volo bog is also supposedly cool.

I also really want to check out cypress creek national wildlife refuge and giant city state park

I've been wanting to do shawnee/garden of the gods too autarch. cahokia is also in that area, which was the largest native settlement in the US territories and had a population in the 10's of thousands before columbus' landing

I want to go to pictured rocks in the UP so bad. I've wanted to go there since I was a teenager but have never been to the UP. The pictures are so beautiful. It's the place I want to go to the most out of anywhere in the world.

the furthest ive gone is Marquette but you definitely start to get that tingly sense once you hit like Hiawatha Natl Forest that youre in a place that has far more in common with the Canadian or Russian wilderness than the prairie, and that if you turn off the main road you really are in the straight up middle of fucking nowhere
