My landlord is dragging his feet on fixing my heat. How much can I "reasonably withhold from rent"

Have you called 311. document everything, your landlord is legally required to keep your unit a certain temp in winter months. theyre opening themselves up to massive legal liability and the city will even come in and fix the issue themselves and then charge the landlord for the work plus penalties.

It's only been 3 days at this point and they keep saying they're sending someone and then no one shows up. My concern is that if I get the city involved they're just going to drag their feet and fuck me over on other things until I move out.

dude seriously call them tonight. its gonna be 10 degrees tomorrow, thats shits unacceptable. you can stay anonymous. you are being far too generous by saying "only 3 days"...thats 3 days more than what they legally are obligated to provide you. city government may suck in some regards but this is why they exist and why you pay taxes to them, so that your rights are enforced.

you have lots of legal protections, the chicago metropolitan tenants organization will be immensely helpful here, i used to volunteer on their hotline and most of our calls were about this exact kind of situation. if you've got proper documentation and timeframe you can stay in a hotel or buy some space heaters and are legally allowed to deduct that from your next month's rent (if my memory from like 8 years ago holds up).

im watching this mayoral forum and i swear to god the burke shit has absolutely posioned the entire election. preckwinkle and mendoza are flailing because they aren't willing to come clean and say "i was buddy buddy with burke because that's how you get along in chicago politics and it sucks and i want to change it" so they come off as, at best, disingenuous. now the sun times endorses lightfoot? who saw that coming? shit is completely out of control there is no consensus here no one knows what the fuck is happening we keep waiting for more bombshells like burke and solis to wreck a campaign before we cast a vote.

I’m not even going to work. My wife’s car swerved into oncoming traffic but she’s ok. It’s a mess and a lot of the schools don’t want to cancel because they’ve already used enough snow days.

Our election will be a runoff between the top two candidates right? Hate that I cant remember how this works and I've been here like 16 years.

Have no idea who to support. Kozlar was the only person that said "yes" to the question on this WBEZ quiz about trying to solve the pension crisis, even if it means screwing current and future city workers. I mean that's our biggest problem from a budget standpoint right? But he has no chance and boarder xxx-xxx-xxxx says he is a weiner and I believe him.

if you guys are on the south side ever, i would try to find a copy of the South Side Weekly, they've been putting a lot of energy into profiling candidates as thoroughly and objectively as possible.

also
this thread/account is good. i thiiink this guy works or helps out at city bureau? I know the City Bureau folks like him.

runoff unless one candidate gets over 50% of the vote (fun fact, rahms re-election was the first time we've actually had a runoff)

I am not deciding who to vote for until the day of the election, too much shit keeps coming out to make an informed decision. extremely disappointed with this crop of candidates, not a true progressive leader in the bunch.

lightfoot or enyia i guess? and neither has an actual chance. what a nightmare. might just leave the mayoral ballot blank on the general and vote against daley or mccarthy in the runoff if it comes to that
