FUUUUCK.

We've driven this car a grand total of 10k miles in the 3 years we've had it and the A/C has failed three times. The first time was less than a month after driving it away from the lot -- dealer said it just needed a recharge and to replace some leaky hoses. Second time was last summer; shop tried to just recharge it and send me along, and I asked them to recheck and they said it was some bad seals. I asked them about the compressor because of all the known Honda Black Death issues with this generation of CRV, and they said the compressor looked fine. I, an idiot, just accepted this.

Last weekend I lost A/C when it was hot, then started getting bubbling noises, then Tuesday was taking my dog to the vet and suddenly lost ALL power while driving -- electrical, engine, everything. Had to heave the steering wheel and get to the side of the road, then restart. Happened again driving home. Compressor/clutch has failed, which is seizing/cooking the main drive belt. And it failed catastrophically, sending little greasy black metal shards throughout the rest of the system and necessitating a complete A/C rebuild. So I either need to pay like $3k to fix a 16-year-old car that we paid $8k for, or pay $500-1k to do a workaround and have a car that drives but has no working A/C, in a state that is slowly boiling.

fuck Honda.

103k - another reason I should have pushed back when the second shop told me the compressor looked good.

(can a compressor even "look good"? can you even visually inspect it without ripping it apart?)

not sure if lemon law applies to your case but could be something to look into since you made several attempts to fix the issue. other thing would be to post a negative review, most companies would respond fast and try to fix the issue, they might cover some of the costs

i don't think the lemon law applies but i'll check. i don't think anyone will care about negative reviews, and i'm not even sure who deserves blame here. this generation of CRVs is notorious for exactly this type of compressor failure. Honda (other than settling some class action that doesn't even apply to my year) has not acknowledged it, and most repair places will just look at you blankly if you ask about it.

i've only ever owned this car and a 98 civic and i like having older used cars that are dependable and economical and that i don't have to baby or worry about little dents and stuff and can drive into the ground (or until they are stolen and totaled, whatever the case may be).

on the other hand this has shaken my faith in Honda (CRVs after 2nd gen look like ass anyway) and i'm not sure it's "worth it" to repair, and the new Broncos are sick.

I think I'm sold on this. I always loved my GTI for the practicality of being able to cram a ton of shit into it, but it's almost 10 years old now and I don't care as much about zooming anymore. Bummer there's no manual option though.

I have a 2007 Acura TSX with 215k miles on it.

Last time I had it in the shop for anything besides an oil change was 3 years ago, and they told me I should replace my timing belt. I declined and the thing has been running fine since.

It's always been in the back of my mind though and figured I'd take it in sometime this summer to get it done. But I just looked up and my model has a timing chain, not a belt and those never need to be replaced. So i'm good right?

Had to get the timing chain replaced on our TSX last year lol.

There's some known flaw with that era of VTC actuator that makes a grinding noise upon cold starts. Requires replacing the chain/actuator. Usually hits around 100k miles, but if you haven't had that issue yet don't see any reason to do it.

I have been in truck land for the last three years, and while it is convenient I recently drove my friends Mazda with a stick shift and now I can’t stop thinking about getting a car that actually drives well

The impulsive part of me wants to go out and grab a WRX. But it seems like there are pretty much none available that generation is coming to an end.

But the truck is worth a stupid amount of money on a trade-in right now

I've owned 2 GTI's consecutively and would buy another one if I still wanted a quick, fun ride. The hatchback is incredibly useful even moreso with the back seats folded down. I bought this last one CPO with 20k miles and the fuel pump failed a few months into ownership, but that still wouldn't dissuade me from getting another.

there has never been an evo not beat to shit drivetrain wise

i intend on racing it and breaking shit all the time

if the interior is clean and there’s no rust and the current engine has good compression i’m good to go

my awful 2014 chevy cruze has, after years of being an awful money pit, finally reached a problem where it's cheaper for me to just finance a new used car.

about to become the proud financee of a honda accord or civic (haven't decided which one yet)

yeah, my mechanic rules and that's what he suggested and actually sat down with me for like 20 minutes while we looked over options.

(on a side note, he didn't even charge me for the most recent round of diagnostics that he did because "dude you just gotta get rid of this thing and if this helps, i'm happy to do it". great dude.)

currently sitting at the dealership waiting for them to run my nonexistent credit.

I only got offered 1500 for the cruze but that's actually better than I was expecting given that the turbo is shot
