Huh, Captain Marvel was one of the best MCU movies so far for sure. Not that I'm an unreserved MCU fan, but still.
Brie portrayed Carol with a real delicate touch, I felt. The amnesia thing didn't take away from her performance, as some critics have claimed, instead there was a sort of fragile touch to the whole movie. It still had room for Carol to become the character she is at her best in the books (super-confident, gleeful in action). But when things could've become bombastic or by the numbers epic/melodramatic instead the movie opts for sweetness or simplicity. A climax that doesn't overstay its welcome is also.. welcome.
I still wanted to see more of her earth life from the comic books - the neighborhood Carol, daily struggles, addictions, and so on - but there's room for that later on. It's very much an origin story, for better or worse, but her relationship with Maria and Monica is still substantial and important. And while I don't think Ben Mendelsohn 'steals the show' (Brie does) he's one of several important pieces in bringing those gentle, sweet moments to the center of the film.
Bonus: Pretty good score (in addition to the 90s songs), felt like it moved through an unusual amount of varied textures and motifs, including some 90s cop movie touches.

I went to the last few Big Movies several days into the release and its just not the same. Getting the earliest showing in the biggest theater is always worth it. The crowd energy is good for the soul.
For sure. I Was surprised to see the first IMAX showing at the crappy theater near me almost sold out already. Should be fun.

Think back on all the films that have pissed off incels in recent years and consider what they all have in common.

They were going to be pissed off regardless (a woman... with power?!?) but their specific grievance this time is that Brie Larson said that she'd like to see more diversity in the press pool and white dudes took that to mean "I want white dude genocide."

its also cuz brie larson has demanded that media outlets on her press tour hire women journalists to cover her and thats apparently really offensive or something
There’s no path to a satisfying conclusion at this point.

I would just shout 'I'm non-binary' at the army of killers and hope I don't run into any TERFs.

fandom is such a shitshow. I skimmed something online about how Zachary Levi wants to get the police involved, re: harassment he's been getting from Captain marvel fans. which, I mean it's too stupid to even contemplate, but I have to imagine if he's getting harassed it's a fakeout by the same incels who are actually anti-Captain Marvel.
I think Captain Marvel and Shazam both look great- I must be a beta sjw.

Yeah, I went ahead and read a front-to-back plot summary and have to say I'm pretty happy with the way this movie handles some classic Marvel history and characters.
There's a summary of the first half of Endgame that's floating around. It comes from 4chan, so huge grain of salt, etc., but it isn't nearly as fan-ficcy as most fake spoilers and is mostly in line with what I'd expect, based on what we've learned from trailers and spy pics and common sense (which, again, could either be a mark in its favor or against it).

I still remember your breakdown of Force Awakens based on the trailers. (It was spot on too, if I remember right).

just last night i was laying into some masculinist asshole on a french Captain Marvel related fb article and this guy was being all contemptuous answering me back and called me dear (well chérie) and ending with "bisous" (kisses) and then i got the satisfaction of telling him that actually i'm a man but thanks for the kisses anyway. Love having an ambiguous first name and causing these situations (not the first time, i've got a pic but it's not obvious unless you click my profile). He has yet to reply back.

Reviews seem to be coalescing around "solid B-minus" or so. People like Larson and SLJ, the story is fine if not too inventive, it offers some interesting context to the pre-Iron Man MCU history, and Boden & Fleck basically disappear behind the usual MCU house style.
Ugh, as someone who loves Boden and Fleck's filmography this is a bummer.

What bothers you more- that they got paid a bunch of money to make a decent superhero film with a female lead and now they can do whatever they want, or It’s Kind of a Funny Story?

I was surprised by how much I liked It's Kind of a Funny Story. I had very low expectations and thought it was good.

i liked the movie, i need to see it again though. im literally sitting in a grocery store parking lot trying to calm down so i can drive home. there were literally 5 people throughout the movie lighting up the entire theater with their addicted little piggy hands scrolling through facebook and twitter screens.
edit: i guess i overuse “literally” when im angry

I was at one point thinking 'oh shit, they're setting up for Monica to be a young Captain Marvel in a future movie!' and then realized 'goddammit if they make her Ms. Marvel and leave behind Kamala Khan, I will have a hard time forgiving Marvel'.
Once Carol powered up it was instantly impossible to take anyone as a threat to her. It was a weird thing - you couldn't make her a threat to them when she was less powered then also make them a threat to her when she got 10x (or maybe 100x? 1000x?) more powerful. It was kind of a plot requirement for the greater MCU for her to be that powerful and it was good for the rest of the film to have her powered at the original level but it fucked with the 3rd act some.
Fury felt a little overly cutesy. The Skrulls being unvarnished good guys coming out of this is sort of a weird continuity to have in place.Toggle SpoilerAll that aside: Larson was good. Mendelsohn was good
but wasn't the main villain, at allToggle Spoiler The music cues ranged from pretty OK to a little cringe-y but were about what I would expect. I semi-expect a fan edit with Pavement and 'Only Shallow' or whatever replacing some of them.
The end credit sequences
were all right, if a bit exactly what one might expect, down to the 'first one is a major plot development teasing a next movie, the second one is a pay off to a runner' thingToggle Spoiler
