this is a really niche don but
Alien Nation=alienation
I look at bluegrass music as this sort of glowing ball. The point is to relax the technique around the glowing ball of feeling.

this made me google more stuff and have the don don that most names were at one point just dumb nicknames that eventually became 'real names' there's probly only like seven original names
like stuff you wouldn't expect like, gretchen, peggy, rita, aurie -- all of those names are just diminutives of margaret

Just realized that revanche means revenge in French and like how that relates to the idea of revanchist politics. Idk maybe not obvious given I don’t speak French but yeah
Also for movie cast ones that Gretchen from Donnie Darko is played by Jena Malone blew my mind

i was the opposite, i would constantly be like "oh look it's gretchen from donnie darko" while only being vaguely aware of the name jena malone and never associating the two. this continued until too old to die young.

words like philanthropy and philosophy have the same-meaning philos-affix as words like bibliophile and audiophile and maybe it's kinda weird we don't actually call philosophers sophiaphiles and philanthropists anthropophiles also the word hemophiliac is kinda a bad joke im sure they aren't enjoying bleeding to death and anyway why aren't they called hemophiles too

the comedian in goodfellas isn't an actor playing a henry youngman-esque character, it's an 85 year old henry youngman.

Just realized by my brain focusing on the “mare” part of nightmare that nightmare is a sexist word. And I’m Proven correct by the dictionary!

I've said it before but learning french has been a goldmine pour les don dons.

"red beans and rice" was a totally foreign concept to me outside of the line in Baby Got Back so I construed it to be a healthy dish that someone might eat while dieting and heard the line as "red beans and rice did miss her", ie she doesn't diet

i thought it was weird that the route options given in the phrase "my way or the highway" don't really sound better or worse than one another, until i realized the second part is actually suggesting you should hit the highway and get out of here

via 99% invisible i learned this week that the PEACE symbol is a stylization of the semafore flags for “N” (one arm at 12, one at 6) and “D” (arms at 4:30 and 7:30) and was initially a Nuclear Disarmament March symbol
There’s no path to a satisfying conclusion at this point.

i got them backwards. the N is 4:30-7:30 and the D is 12 and 6.
