this is a really bad one because i've chanted it but "no justice no peace" means "there will be no peace without justice," not "the police provide neither justice nor peace"

when I was young I thought "no woman no cry" meant that without women there would be no reason to cry.

It's funny because there is a line in The Office where a dumb character thinks the meaning is the correct one because the writers obviously also thought the real meaning was this.

I thought the wrong way too until a few years ago, fwiw. Also my mom's terrible mother passed away when I was pretty young and I got in trouble for singing "no grandma, she die" with my sister.

I mean like...i mean i THINK it means that if you don't have a "woman", as in a gf, partner, wife, then you will not be crying. OF course i have never read the lyrics of this song.
But i guess you mean that without the existence of women.

...it doesn't mean that? Wait holy shit this is an in-post don-don 'no (person I am speaking to who is a woman), please don't cry'

Less a dondon, more of a remembered fact, but Arrested Development is about a developer who gets arrested.
Wonder if they chose the family business based on the title or vice-versa

No, woman, no cry
No, woman, no cry
'Ere, little darlin', don't shed no tears
No, woman, no cry
I always thought it was “if you don’t have a woman then you’ll have no reason to cry” but the lyrics pretty clearly suggest the alternate reading.

No justice no peace is meant to have multiple interpretations.
Providing justice inherently provides peace.
If we don’t get justice, we will be violent.
You are giving neither justice nor peace.
