Yeah, I really dig that movie. Texas Chainsaw meets a high school prom is a pretty enjoyable mix.

3 From Hell wasn't bad, but definitely misses the charm of Rejects or the camp of House. scene with Sid was sad. so glad we got to finish on a Terry Reid song again.

Wait, why is Halloween 3 getting ranked among John Carpenter movies?

I might just stop my marathon at any point this month but I'm watching while I have it in me. First batch:

1. Luz, 2018 2.5/5
Image
Image
This honestly did nothing for me. I love Euro horror, love slow and moody and atmospheric, but this never takes flight for me. Too stagey, maybe? I don't like live theater and this felt like that, almost. I definitely want some of those weird Hypercolour drinks, though. I zoned out quite a bit and played on my phone for this one. Not an auspicious start to the month.

2. A Bucket of Blood, 1959 4/5
Image
Image
ALL HAIL KING DICK MILLER. This is more like it. I realized that although I've seen a metric ton of Roger Corman's production credits I've only seen a few of his directorial efforts. This is a funnier and more entertaining riff on the art world and the insufferable gatekeepers of it than Velvet Buzzsaw was. Loser Dick works at a beatnik haven coffee shop, accidentally kills his landlady's cat and turns it into a sculpture, rave reviews and long sought-after friendships and attention result, so he moves onto bigger prey. Fleet and funny. Pompous Orson Welles-ish poet is the best.

3. The Bat, 1959 1.5/2
Image
Image
Terribly flat murder mystery starring an underused Vincent Price and an entertaining Agnes Moorehead as a take-no-shit and capable writer who finds herself mixed up in bank theft conspiracies and a local murderous perv who likes to claw his victims. Outside of a strong central female character with agency (and her not-so-subtly coded homosexual relationship with her live-in maid), there's not much to recommend here.

4. Baron Blood, 1972 2/5
Image
Image
Image
How was this Mario Bava's follow-up to Bay of Blood? The most rote and by-the-numbers gothic horror imaginable. Score's lackluster, I didn't give a shit about any of the characters, slow moving...at least the Baron looks kind of cool and there's some nice sets and shots throughout. I don't have much to say about this. Disappointing.

5. Halloween III: Season of the Witch, 1982 4.5/5
Image
Image
First rewatch of the month. Saw an IMAX screening of this with a meet-and-greet with Tom Atkins, who was delightful and friendly and told lots of fun stories. It's a fucking classic, you know it, go watch it again for the millionth time. Here's a dweeby pic of me and Tom, and then my signed poster:

6. The Perfection, 2018 2/5
Image
Image
Surely we can get a better #MeToo horror movie than this, right? Even my crush on Allison Williams can't save this. Feels like a gonza DePalma joint at moments - especially Raising Cain - but is never as confidently wacky or supremely weird enough. Absurd twist piled on top of absurd twist that would have been fun if they only would have embraced the ridiculousness a bit more.

7. X: The Man With the X-Ray Eyes, 1963 4/5
Image
Image
And Roger Corman delivers another winner. Ray Milland is a well-intentioned doctor who experiments upon himself in order to be...a very good doctor. I like that our hero is sympathetic in this one and has only the best of intentions but things just keep getting fucked up for him. Impressive proto-psychedelia effects, strong story, nice set-ups and an unexpected swerve into straight-up cosmic horror in the end. Highly recommended.

What are the good horror flicks of 2019? i haven't seen much but everything has been bogus.

Midsommar - good
3 From Hell - ok
Us - ok
Velvet Buzzsaw - ok
Child's Play - dumb
It Chapter 2 - terrible

not even particularly interested in checking out Pet Sematary yet. any recommendations for something campy or stylish? probably gonna dig through the VOD releases until Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama 2 comes out.

Escape Room was pleasantly stupid and fast paced. I liked all the characters and it felt like very PG-13-ified Saw but more action packed. Genuinely pumped for the sequel.

It hasn't had any kind of home release yet but I need to see this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Them_That_Follow
Deep in Appalachia, Pastor Lemuel Childs (Walton Goggins) presides over an isolated community of serpent handlers, an obscure sect of Pentecostals who willingly take up venomous snakes to prove themselves before God. As his devoted daughter, Mara (Alice Englert) prepares for her wedding day, under the watchful eye of Hope Slaughter (Olivia Colman), a dangerous secret is unearthed and she is forced to confront the deadly tradition of her father’s church.

You had me at Goggins, but then you add Olivia Colman, Jim Gaffigan, and snake handling? please leak soon

i watched this because it was at the top of a bunch of "best horror movies of 2019" lists and i was really disappointed. it was boring and i think its a pretty big stretch to call it a horror movie at all.

In The Black Tower, we enter the world of a man haunted by a tower which, he believes, is following him around London. The character of the central protagonist is indicated only by a narrative voice-over.

My God, I love this film. It felt like a visual representation of Spiderland-era Slint. Capital-M-Minimal horror short from the director of "The Girl Chewing Gum."
