nah, you're fine blab. your concerns are understandable. i just think they can be addressed with solutions that present less risk to you and your loved ones than purchasing a gun does.

if i was not a white guy i would honestly think hard about purchasing some sort of firearm.

but then not being white would also make me very scared about doing so

in conclusion, guns and america are kind of crummy

i think it might be cool to have an antique WWI rifle or something.

or maybe a musket with one of those phonograph bore ends that i can use in an elmer fudd costume

guns are often pretty impressive pieces of engineering and even works of art in certain cases!

it's just, ya know, they kill huge numbers of people so they gotta go.

can you even get ammo for a gun that old tho?

the bayonet is the most dangerous part of it at this point, i'd think.

depending on which wwi rifle you are talking about, you can def get the ammo. typically people super into that stuff will also be into packing their own cartridges, which gives even more customization options. some of the older popular guns don't even have cartridges, and you pack in the powder etc for each shot the old fashioned way.

chris hooks wrote about the false feeling of safety/power a gun gives you, and why it's illusory. the headline/twitter blurb addresses a different aspect of the article, but if you go down to the part where he mentions his dad in the FBI, that's about where this part starts.

yeah, they still make muskets and most musket ammo can be used on older, antique weapons too because the technology hasn't evolved much. my dad has a musket, it's fun to play with.

yeah, in general, people are absolutely trash at assessing risk and probabilities and what means are effective for mitigation of those risks. gun perverts exploit that vulnerability.

we should absolutely ban videogames, though, for reasons outside of gun violence.

im a woman who takes public transit everywhere (even at night! alone! gasp!) and i can count the number of times ive felt unsafe due to strangers on one hand. it blows my mind that anyone could be scared enough of strangers that they own a machine capable of taking human life (and im not talking about cars here!)

i would legitimately like to read one of these studies that accounts for like, environment and usage i guess.

about a year ago i was living with an indigenous non-binary femme presenting sex worker that received similarly credible threats from a john that felt jilted by them and stalked our home. they bought a gun in response to that. i can't say it made me feel safer but i also can't say i blame them for reacting in that way. i felt pretty similar reading both you and zorb's stories. it's very possible that it's still much more likely that that weapon would've been used on someone in our house but given that trans panic is a legitimate defense in most of the united states and the police wouldn't have cared about any of us had we died.... yeah i dunno.

i think about that, and then i compare it to the last time i thought about when i was living in a house with a gun, with my grandfather who would go on racist rants and tell me about how to use the shotgun he kept by his bed in case a black person broke into the house. i mostly thought about turning that gun on myself. it was pretty easy to see why it would be more likely to be used on us in the csae of a breakin. (this was also in the exact same area of the united states you live in iirc, i'm well aware of how terrifying that frontier justice shit can be to face in person)

i can't imagine that the latter scenario, which is about fifty million times fucking stupider isn't much, much more common than the former. i don't actually have an answer to your question but i just wanted to reemphasize that you aren't stupid and i completely get the perspective you're coming from.
