Left's reaction to the horror in CT reveals just how craven they are. Kids are dead & all they think about is a political agenda #disgusting

well yeah, but i mean it's that kind of paranoia or distrust that creates these small but powerful coalitions who take an absolutist stand on all of these issues

Oh, you certainly can't, no doubt. But bread's question was, do you attempt to shield them from terrible things in the world, or engage with them on the fact that these monstrous events often happen. I'd rather gradually introduce my hypothetical child to the idea of the world being shitty, rather than have them grow up naive and have that worldview violently shattered later on in life. I'd think that sort of trauma would be infinitely more disturbing than introducing a realistic worldview to your child.
Again, I don't have a kid, so I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I have talked to a lot of children in Iraq who have grown up knowing the realities of war and violence. I will do everything in my power to keep my kids naive.

addison my point wasnt even an "argument" its a statistic.
middle class americans get scared when they read shit like this and despair for thier own safety and post on FB about whats the world coming to. its hysteria.
This is a a really depressing story, and our gun laws and general social attitudes about guns in the US are indefensible morally, but as mentioned in the aurora thread, this isnt even the best gun control arugment, cuz its an outlier. the gun control argument is the the casual domestic violence shooting or the escalated bar fight or traffic incident or what have you.
i'm the biggest anti-gun pussy here, and if reform is born out of this being a final straw, i'll take it, but i dont think its the firmest ground from which to indict our gun culture.
all that said, its not misleading to point out that a considerably smaller percentageof human beings will encounter human violence now than ever in recorded history. its not an excuse for drones or an abdication of responsible gun control policy, but its a rational response to the hysteria i see from so many people on social media in the aftermath of events like these where otherwise rational people start chestthumping or despairing for our trajectory.
There’s no path to a satisfying conclusion at this point.
