considering there is so much public opposition to state authorities regulating gun sales, if you hold gun sellers and manufacturers liable it incentivizes them to "voluntarily" limit sales/restrict sales/engage in background checks/etc. also taking money away from capitalists that can be used to lobby against broader restrictions is unambiguously good

I can only imagine going through something like Sandy Hook and then, six years later, realizing that nothing has changed or will change, and by their actions people have proven that they don't actually care.

Knives. Automobiles. Cold medicine. Alcohol. Cigarettes. Coffee.

What do these items have in common?

They’re all held to a higher safety standard than firearms.

Because of product-liability law, manufacturers must equip them with proper warnings, limitations and built-in designs that enhance their safety.

If they don’t, consumers can sue them for harm caused by the product. And all consumer products manufacturers are required to ensure that their products are free of design defects and don’t threaten public safety.

Guns, as Jonathan Lowy of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence’s Legal Action Project has said, are “the only consumer product in America with no federal safety oversight.”

One of those things that you know is true but looks absolutely insane when you say it/write it out.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has been caught on hidden camera appearing to suggest the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, where a gunman shot and killed 35 people at the Tasmanian former prison colony, was a government conspiracy.

The footage is part of the undercover, three-year long investigation run by Al Jazeera that exposed the Australian political party earlier this week trying to water down the nation’s gun laws.

In one video released by the news network, Senator Hanson is secretly filmed saying she has “a lot of questions” about Port Arthur.

“An MP said it would actually take a massacre in Tasmania to change the gun laws in Australia,” Senator Hanson tells Rodger Muller, an Al Jazeera journalist who for three years pretended to be the leader of a fictitious firearm advocate group called Gun Rights Australia, an identity he established to infiltrate One Nation.

“Haven’t you heard that? Have a look at it. It was said on the floor of parliament.”

In another piece of footage, Senator Hanson is sitting with her chief of staff James Ashby when they discuss other conspiracy theories.

“That whole September 11 thing, too,” Mr Ashby says, immediately after the group brought up the MPs comments about Port Arthur.

“Those shots. They were precision shots,” Senator Hanson responds.

“Check the number out. I’ve read a lot and I have read the book on it, Port Arthur. A lot of questions there.”

My kids are home from school today due to this woman. They've cancelled school for pretty much the entire metro-Denver area.

pretty messed up that every US parent on this board will have their kid go through at least one lockdown emergency. doesn't matter where you live or what kind of school you go to, at some point, it'll happen.

schools shut down; children are thrown under desks as part of drills; teachers have fake guns shoved in their face; police default to brute force - people die because of the risk of, not even the presence of guns; every concert or sports event i go to requires see-through bags no bigger than a half-gallon of milk, and have metal detectors at every entrance

all of that is a far greater loss of freedom than any gun law ever could be. society is sculpted around the desire of the small number of gun nuts in america.
well that was intense

i know that this is not a new thing (ted bundy fan mail etc.), but it's ostensibly increasing visibility and upwardly trending prevalence i think is a symptom of the derangement-by-internet afflicting our generation and onwards, as well as the mass shooting themselves

My daughter had a lockdown earlier this year because a kid had a gun in his book bag. The principle was fired because they waited until the end of the day to inform parents of what happened instead of alerting them at the time the gun was found.
