im replaying final fantasy 7 for the first time in about 10-12 years. my core group is cloud, cait sith, and barrett aka the Hilarious Krew. lmao if u dont use cait sith all the time. im using epsxe and i just got onto disc 2. the first time i fought jenova life in the forgotten city i killed him before learning aqualung from him, and then after i reloaded and fought him again he did aqualung a buncha times and gave me my first game over of this play through. so when i finally killed him after learning aqualung, i had watched aeris die 3 times. final fantasy 7 is a really weird game. the fighting system is not terribly deep but it does a way better job than ff8 of incentivizing the regular use of magic, especially summons, which at least keeps the fighting system fun. the dialog is of course a pretty shoddy translation of what im gonna guess is a not terribly impressive original script, but its not without its powerful moments. or maybe the dialog isnt even the problem so much as the sketchy characterization...the game establishes individual tones for each character pretty early on, but then every character ends up saying plenty of shit that seems really out of character, or the in other instances they will say things that seem in character but ill-fitting for the situation. meanwhile the plot itself is super melodramatic, so the sum effect is kind of impressionistic, like you're watching a bunch of free-existing emotions express themselves on screen rather than a linear story about distinct characters. i think i missed some materia back in golden saucer...alexander? or is that in the #snowlevel part?

game sucked
I think I could play 5,6,8,9 or 10 again.
i genuinely dont think im emotionally equipped to say if ff7 objectively sucks or not i do know its very flawed and awkward but i can say im having a very good time replaying it right now, and i dont think that's 100% related to nostalgia that said i will note that my chill levels are suspiciously elevated when playing the game
did another 9 replay a couple of months ago, loved it but I kind of compare it to the batman series
batman begins and ff9 are both good and have very few flaws, but neither are very ambitious dark knight and ff7 are really flashy and have what are potentially the best moments of any series, which tend to mask a lot of the flaws within them rises and ff8 tried to do much and so were the most daring, but also contain some pretty glaring flaws with pacing without really having the same features to mask them

Cosign all of this but dude just buy the PSN version. It looks pretty good and is $9.

i seriously dont know why nerds have done fan translations of ff6 and chrono trigger and yet haven't even touched 7 which is barely coherent the vast majority of the time.
wow thats a great idea. i shoulda been doin that shit in high school.
during the Final Fantasy sale last month on PSN, I ended up buying everything. So now I have 1-9 among various formats. Thinking of doing a run though of them all, but I feel like I'd get bored and stall by FFII
i know you can go on a date with red xiii which ive always wanted to do but then i forget to look up how to make it happen also cosign on 12 being amazing. i want to replay it and write about it. maybe ill do that next.
I wouldn't mind playing through FF9 again at some point in the near future. Thought the game was tons of fun and had probably the best writing and characterisation in the series (not that that is saying much, but y'know)

so much better than any of the other games after 9
the only things that i didn't like about 12 were i) story was pretty basic. its like the overcompensated for how melodramatic X was ii) way too easy to exploit the gambit system to level up iii) once the star wars comparisons were made i couldn't get them out of my head
