this installation ending right as you get to the world map for the first time remains pretty insane to me

I think it was when I heard the first trailer that featured English dialogue that I was like “this is going to be real dumb.”

I sort of think ending at the end of Midgar would be fine if you knew when the next episode was out and it was like 3 or 4 months max. I think 6 is being optimistic and there is no firm schedule of when the next eps will come out and Square are definitely known for rigid schedule keeping as it is

my biggest gripe after playing this demo, that didn't translate quite as much from all the footage that'd I'd already seen from it, despite all the really great polished visuals and detailed environments it doesn't come close to matching the tone/atmosphere of the inside of the reactor of the opening bombing run in the original.

The combat is so tedious. At least XV had the warp mechanic to keep things a little exciting. Love to jam on square to hit things with a sword, then change to another character so I can jam on square to shoot things with a gun. Sometimes mix it up and jam on triangle, so I can do the same things, but slower.

I mean, the origina's combat (rpgs in general...) can be pretty simple. I found it engaging enough but yeah I hope it gets more dynamic as it goes. I was pleasantly surprised at the demo, didn't LOVE it tho.... I think I'll buy it when it's on sale

Yep!

Don’t understand the early reviews saying the combat is great. Maybe once you get Tifa and Aerith you can mix it up more?

Once in a while, I’ll remember I can block. But I beat the scorpion boss just holding down buttons and running around.

That said, I’m still a sucker for pretty graphics which this def has.

2nd time through I was able to get the hang of the combat, specifically doing stuff between 2 characters pretty effortlessly, and breezed through it

using the l1+one of the face buttons shortcuts thing helps a lot (you can reassign different actions to them in the menu)

still hating the dang music

they’re gonna get rid of the world map, aren’t they? man i was just playing ffvi and remembering how much i love a huge ass world map, with lots of nooks and crannies and secrets. makes the whole scope feel better. plus games like ffv and ffiv where you get multiple vehicles that open the map up slowly.

haven’t had a decent world map in years. sucks.

it'd be so weird and sad if the remake bombed in sales and they just didn't finish the other games

one analog i've been thinking about lately are the marvel capcom games

they started off so colourful and crazy and off the wall, and then it just descended into this dirty gross looking 3d thing with no personality or appealing style, despite the sheen.

i think with this ff7 remake all the kitschiness will be gone and it will all just be over-serious and hammy.

i played the demo

the battle system seems like it could be cool on harder difficulties... definitely seems like it could allow for more strategization than the ff15/kh3

seeing all of these events formatted in the modern serious cutscene style tho... just seems so impossibly goofy. i know i'm going to play through this at some point but yeah the constant criticism i have of 'making an experience that's so heavily based on abstraction sucked the life out of it by removing those layers of abstraction' seems to be holding true.

The moment that sticks out to me is where there is a gate barrier and everybody runs and hops over it and so you run to it and then it pauses and tells you "If you run to a thing with a triangle over it you'll do it automatically" and then you have to exite the pause and then do what you were about to do anyway

I ended up liking the demo a lot. The combat is pretty strange, but I felt like it made sense how your basic autoattack is just killing time until your ATB bars are up, which was emphasized by how ATB gauges fill way slower when you're not controlling the character. I found the scorpion fight a lot of fun once I started swapping between Barrett and Cloud. It's really not too far from the original battle system, just with mmo style positioning during boss fights. The dodge feels superfluous though.

Orchestral takes on the music were pretty lame though. Like I hope they don't add a bunch of timpani rolls and french horns to cloud's cool-ass motorcycle theme.

yeeeah

had nothing to do this evening so played the demo and... well one of the things i loved about the ps1 final fantasy games are the pre-rendered background and differing and forced perspectives. they gave the environments so much character while this just felt a bit anonymous

combat was okay but half the time i felt like i had no idea what was going on

agree, i enjoyed the demo a lot. the dodge seemed useless except to cancel attacks and there was really a lack of defensive options. i wonder how aeris will play with this battle system. looking forward to punching shit with tifa.

don't understand the complaints about the music. i loved that moment when the orchestral battle theme kicked in for the first time

Why does every other set piece in ff12 involve running from endlessly spawning enemies? Why does my character only have autoattack ans steal 6 hours in? This game....is weird

playing ff6 (snes version, on an emulator on the wii) for the first time

it's sick so far!

i always feel a little disconnected from my "main" character when you have this kind of split up, but it's still cool

i wanna get mog in my party
