How much credence should we put in a centrist breakaway from Labour. Seems like terrible timing and also just a bad idea in general

Honestly I think there probably is a constituency for that party, especially if they are strongly opposed to Brexit (which I suppose is a given at this point).

Seems like a way to either have a Conservative government or a Conservative-LibDem style coalition where Conservatives do whatever they want forever to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess if they are a breakaway on the Strongly Opposed to Brexit but would later come back in that makes a bit more sense but I don't know if that's how things are done here.

I think the last week has shown that the constituency for a breakway centrist labour party is a lot smaller than what FBPE types imagined

They would scoop a big popular vote but get hammered via first past the post.

To be fair, I think Brexiteers DID have a plan about how to "solve" Brexit and it involved screwing over NI/Ireland and the border but then Theresa May probably did her biggest fuck up (among many) in calling that snap election and losing her majority to where she needed NI votes.

Like imagine if the Conservaties didn't care about DUP votes, this backstop shit would be a non-issue and the Irish would just have to "suck it up"

That's not true. The EU channeling the Irish government would have still insisted upon the backstop. The ERG and others would still have a problem with it.

Is Kate Hoey despised over there or do people take her seriously? Every time I read about her it’s for something batshit crazy but I acknowledge Owen Jones may not have his finger on the pulse of the average UK citizen.

Sorry, I meant that the Conservative government would just accept the backstop without caring about the resulting chaos w/ Ireland/NI

I didn't remember til I re-read the LRB essay on Vauxhall that Hoey was from Northern Ireland. Authentocrat types love her, she's basically custom built to be treated as a representative sample of heavy accented Brexit Britain. if nothing else she's the best argument for primaries/ "mandatory reselection" going:

[Lambeth] is also the most pro-Remain place in the UK, with 79 per cent of the population voting to stay in the EU at the June referendum. The only place with a higher Remain vote was Gibraltar. Hoey, though, was a prominent member of the Leave campaign. She was briefly co-chair of the Labour Leave group, and repeatedly made public appearances alongside Nigel Farage. A photo shows the two of them taking part in the idiotic Leave ‘flotilla’ on the Thames not long before the referendum. When Farage came out with the notorious ‘Breaking Point’ poster, showing a queue of Syrian refugees on the Croatia-Slovenia border with the clear implication that this was threatening the UK, other prominent Leavers such as Boris Johnson distanced themselves from it: ‘Not our campaign’ and ‘Not my politics’, he said. Ukip’s only MP (who has since quit the party) called it ‘morally wrong’. Vauxhall Labour Party asked Hoey to criticise the poster, but she didn’t, or not quickly or persuasively enough. They subsequently passed a motion censuring her for ‘the seemingly enthusiastic support and comradeship she gave Mr Farage during the campaign’.

Hoey has always been heterodox. There have in the past been rumours that she would join the Tories, and she is an avowed fan of Theresa May: ‘I like her style,’ she said to the BBC. ‘When I watch PMQs now or when I see her, particularly abroad at international events, I have to say I feel quite proud that she is the prime minister of the United Kingdom.’ Hoey is an Ulster Protestant, a farmer’s daughter from Antrim – an unusual background for a Labour MP for an Inner London constituency. She is one of the sitting MPs who voted against the Iraq War; she also voted against foundation hospitals, and the ban on fox-hunting. Five years after the Dunblane massacre, she said she had ‘never accepted the link between legal holding of firearms and illegal weapons’. Gun crime was a live issue in this part of London at that point, but Hoey’s stance on the question doesn’t seem to have done her any harm. Perhaps that’s because she has a good reputation as a local MP, or perhaps it’s just because this is one of those safe seats where, as the saying has it, they weigh the votes rather than count them.

Kate Hoey can fuck off. For different reasons, Chuka Umunna and Chris Leslie can fuck off too.
