the best part of marginalia is it hardly ever refers to the text -- just bored monks in the scriptorium doodling

yesss best thread go abs go
and yeah why is He having His head cleaved/sawed? i don't recall that from the gospels or any non-canonical gospels. seems they couldn't pull a fast one on anyone about christ although i'll probably be proven wrong and you'll next post a doodle of a pole being shoved through his Sacred Perenium and Holye PisseHole. i suppose it could be an apostle/martyr tho

this is probably the case. it MIGHT be a sort of "for instance" illustration, where perhaps someone else was referring to christ bearing torment -- but more likely it's another martyr. at this point christ didn't have as strict of a go-to "look" as we associate with him now.

In high school, I would always do these stick figure flip books in the margins, superspies dodging ninja stars and shooting holes in thugs and shit. At the end of the year you would generally sell the books back to the school, and later I learned that these were a hot item among next year's class, passed around and traded for. I wonder if any monks ever had the presence of mind to do a flip book.

and correct me if i'm wrong cause you know way more about this than i do, but wouldn't it usually be the older, more experienced monks who were allowed access to expensive paints and materials to create manuscripts with? so it's not like this is some fresh faced, immature 18 year old doodling dick trees but like, fairly grizzled higherups just messing around
you're mostly right, yeah.
they definitely took talent into consideration too, though. if they had a talented artist/transcriber on their hands, they definitely would have utilized him. most any monastery where they had the money to dedicate to a scriptorium wouldn't even worry about the cost at that point. vellum was easy enough to make (just skin), and pigments were mostly natural at this time, though of course you would need $$ for some of the rarer shades. it's why you see the same natural palates in manuscripts.

in 5th grade my friend drew a pic of a dude eating his own dick in a hot dug bun that would work really well in a medieval text

NOTES EDITION:
(no pictures, because they're all in latin anyway, but these are documented good ones)
I am very cold.
The parchment is hairy.
Thank God, it will soon be dark.
Now I've written the whole thing: for Christ's sake give me a drink.
As the harbor is welcome the sailor, so is the last line to a scribe.
This is sad! O little book! A day will come in truth when someone over your page will say, 'The hand that wrote this is no more.'
Oh, my hand.
