yea broodstar i would love for you to expand on that. i was kind of interested in getting the switch mhgu but when i realized it was a generation earlier to the game that everyone is playing and loving i decided to pass. would be down if it rules.

i'm just hitting high rank so i don't think i'd be able to make a judgment until i'm done with the game, but what i do prefer about it over world is the sheer amount of content. it's probably got 3x the amount of stuff to do than world. there's also a higher skill ceiling, whether that's introduced artificially because of bad controls or system limitations or not, which means i can probably extend the lifetime of this game even further.

the downside is probabaly everything else, especially anything qol or ui related. it's glaringly noticeable going backwards from world. you have to pick up more things, you have to input three different button presses which takes like 10s to gather as opposed to 3s holding a in world. maps are much more obfuscated and you gotta chase monsters through loading zones and track with paintballs. yadda yadda. it's kinda like playing fallout 1 instead of a 2018 crpg like poe2 or d:os2. there's just a number of much more arcane systems and tidbits that you're just gonna have to get used to, but from what i can tell, the payoff's there

if you're new to the series, i'd definitely just play world. that should probably keep you content for a good 300h. whereas i can see something like mh4u or genu keeping me entertained for upwards of 1000h+

i think i'd also like to properly give mhxx (genu) and/or freedom unite a shot, but pootis/lil bro/no good advice would be able to better expand on that

monster hunter generations ultimate on switch is i think an enormous game that took elements from all the pre-world games and meshes them together and adds a bunch of shit. it has something like 3 or 4 times the amount of monsters as world but it's also a port of a 3ds game and the graphics are kinda unimpressive. like broodstar said, world also has a bunch of qol improvements over earlier titles, and they aren't present in this one.

i think genu is supposed to have the most content of any mh game to date though, and it's got this unique style+arts system that looks like it'd be super fun to fuck around with. you can make any weapon become aerial and do a bunch of midair shit. combat and core gameplay is the same, probably better on a console than a 3ds because controlling the camera is just too much. but if you're not someone who spends more than 100-300h on a game, world is probably what you're looking for

I was going to try to make a stealth game with chess pieces but couldn't figure it out in my mind how it would be fun so i gave up... maybe I will get a prototype going this weekend?

the one interesting idea i had was that certain opponents would only be vulnerable to checkmates...

We did

But you hardcore gamers didn't want to get a 3ds

At some point we'll probably get a 'World' with 100 monsters too

i think worldu would probably melt my brains. but i'm honestly not too optimistic because it seems they're tied up dribbling out reskinned "arch-tempered" content and very slowly at that

mh4u is so good i think i'm going to overdose on euphoria

I missed the whole battle royale thing because my computer was too shitty to run PUBG. This is kinda tempting though

Just remembered I wrote a preview of it for the dumb tech reviews site I work at now

oh there's a thread for it huh

Styles definitely alleviate the pwn but you miss out on all the anime supers. Assuming Valor is gonna be really bad when I get to G/ex quests since getting hit in stance is only 30% damage but everything one shots you anyway

Think I prefer adept/Valor to the mantles, at least you have to be somewhat in tune with what youre fighting instead of just mashing attack for as long as rocksteady is up

i just like the sense that my choices are more meaningful. instead of walking thru a fight like "eat + equip whatever, spam five flashes and one hits, a-mash, chug a pot", i have to be more conscious of what items i'm using/can use, what i have to eat for, what i have to have equipped, and the combat is a lot more unforgiving (though definitely feels worse) but paradoxically enjoyable. if i make a bad input or attack at a bad time, it can spell death, which is kinda what i'm looking for in world

but check on me again when the honeymoon phase is over

I believe that was contracts, the nighttime hotel level. There's a hotel room where you can see a ghost in the mirror.

Contracts was a great game. I feel like it tends to get overshadowed by blood money's legacy, but really, I think those two games were equally great.

After a boss fight around the middle of the game kicked my ass in Dragon Quest XI and made me realize I was underleved and had to grind, I resorted to using cheat engine. I had been enjoying the game's old school qualities with no problems at all but I guess the grinding did me in, I'm not particularly patient regarding grinding if I can avoid it. It's stil one of my goty, even if I cheesed it so I had to play less of it.
