broodstar the only way in which i “told you how to play the game” was saying “do the b-sided after the a-sides imo”, which i said in response to you asking what order to do them in. i was literally answering a question that you asked in this thread, get a grip

if you want to cheat your way through the game, god bless, but instantly looking up a solution to a puzzle instead of exploring the world and then complaining that the game doesn’t teach you well is ridiculous. it’s like bumping into a cuttable plant in pokémon, googling how to get by it, then whining that the game didn’t tell you what to do there. the game absolutely what’ve told you what to do, you just didn’t give it the chance, and then decided that was the game’s fault

i also think this wounded sanctimonious posting spree is ridiculous because you post one hundred posts in this thread a day about what the right way and wrong way to play games are, you just frame your opinions in terminology about “optimal play”

i'm mostly extremely exaggerative when i post, especially in here. i do not feel wounded at all and wish nothing ill towards either of you, but both you and figaro have rather explicitly said that i am either 1) playing the game stupidly, which seems more forceful than your above post seems to indicate, or 2) detracting some sort of experience for myself

internetfriend wrote:that's a real stupid way to play a game

figaro wrote:idk this game seems like one that is much better for lack of explanation or having a bunch of instructions pop up since its all fairly simple

the fact that we're in an age where information is so readily available, it's almost a fact that gamers will ask questions, look up walkthroughs to solutions, or netdeck in card games, even savescum or cheat. saying i am playing the game stupidly by doing any of these things is fine--what you and i derive out of a game can be different, and there are multiple ways to enjoy it, but i'm free to do any of that as i please.

if this was one of those oldschool rpgs which give you no manual as to what stats do or don't do, but that anyone who looks up what the mechanics of the game are via a walkthrough are "cheating themselves out of the experience"--an argument that happens frequently, mind you!--then i absolutely don't care for that opinion at all.

in fact, most games withhold information from you, and certainly, some part of the fun can be exploring it. into the breach, for example, doesn't tell you freezing the train counts as a defense. why do acid puddles and conveyer belts and mines affect flying units, but acid tiles don't? there are many things that some will argue are part of the fun in learning the game, which is fine and valid, but i myself prefer having all the information readily available to me. i would *appreciate* a help section that would tell me what interacts or doesn't interact with which, but i'm not saying it's necessary at all! which is why i like discussing the games on reddit or resetera or wherever else, where we can and have compiled a list of helpful tips and tricks.

anyway, if broodstar's approach to games is to just smash his face bloody against them until they break, I think we should be accepting of that

that would be much cooler to me than tapping his face against them once, looking up the solutions, then claiming the game is bad because he did that

just finished the a-sides of celeste. incredible game, deserves every good thing that's been said about it.

started on the b-sides and immediately realise this is gonna take a while. surprisingly little of the experience gained beating super meat boy over the last few months is transferable here, or at least that's how it feels.

alright, well since it seems you're going to hold a grudge, my last and hopefully somewhat placating post:

if i ever claimed the game was bad for not teaching me things, then that would indeed be suck ass. i don't think i did. my impression is that you vehemently disagreed with how i played the game and sought to voice that out immediately.

when i say i would *appreciate* all information being given to me, i do mean just appreciate it! a separate menu that contains all the nuts and bolts of a game's mechanics. avernum's a very good example of this

Image

i think this is the best of both worlds. you can appease noobs like me who like having information at their disposal, and anyone who wants to learn stuff themselves is free to do so. celeste is, however, indeed very good at teaching you things and giving you the tools necessary to tackle current problems

obviously, rpgs are a way different case than platformers and roguelikes especially in which learning is seen largely as part of the experience, but i fail to see why it's so problematic that if i sucked ass at something and looked up a video only to realize you could duck because the person in the video ducked. you say it would've been taught to me eventually, but that seems hypocritical because nowhere does the game indicate or insist i should leave b sides for later, and i highly doubt the game will explicitly tell you some of the smaller tricks like momentum of wall jumping that i could instead look up by googing "help me i suck at celeste"

i'd be curious how you apply this same reasoning of "the game teaches you everything you need to know, fuck off if you choose to look it up" to, i wanna be the boshy, for example
