Beat Arkham City and Arkham Knight in rapid succession this week. AC felt like a really marked upgrade on AA - the combat felt way more fluid as did the predator stuff. I definitely just got better because all I'd been playing is Batman and that made me enjoy it more. I think the game looks so much better than Asylum from an art perspective (in AA everyone looks like typical Unreal Engine beefcake nonsense) and it's pretty impressive looking for 2011! The story exhibited a bit that bad kitchen sink thing I associate with the bad comic book stories (I don't read comics so perhaps that's a bad/dumb take) where it had to shoehorn every single bit of arcana from the Batman comics. The Joker throughline was inspired though and the conclusion was good.

Arkham Knight was so frustrating. For the first half of the game, I was convinced this thing was severely underrated by everyone. The gameplay feels so tight, the graphics/art are incredible, the story and writing were really doing it for me (love John Noble as Scarecrow). There were a lot of really inspired bits of writing (the ACE chemical plant sequence, the backstory of the Joker-infected people, the first few times Scarecrow Announces His Intentions on the video screens). The predator sequences seemed super fun because of the new takedown system and combat was great too. Unfortunately, the game just completely unravels in the second half - the predator stuff becomes repetitive, they add too many finicky enemy types that just make the combat a boring puzzle where you're struggling to press X-AA-B or LT-B-AA-B. The story loses all momentum and fails to do the its own themes justice. Stuff seems like maybe it was cut out? (the Arkham Knight just literally disappears and then helps you wordlessly and without any closure or follow-up?/you mentally defeat the Joker disease while high on Scarecrow fumes??). The secret ending was hilarious though (I didn't do any side stuff, just watched it on Youtube). Oh and the scene where the guy who LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE BRUCE WAYNE??? was incredibly well done and cool.Toggle Spoiler

Batmobile sections were complete bullshit in the second half. It's like they didn't even playtest the game... utterly bizarre.

I 100% completed Arkham Knight twice within a year and recently replayed Arkham City and Arkham Origins. I love all those damn games. Origins felt tedious on my second playthrough though. I remember.liking it a lot more when I first played it but its definitely weaker. They tried to be really cinematic with it but it didn't always work. Like the deathstroke fight looked great but it was mostly a simple formula with a lot of button mashing.

I wish City had more catwoman stuff to do because she is so satisfying to play. I'd love to see a new series based on her since they said they're done with Batman. I really hope they keep the Gotham universe going at least. I always felt like Azrael could be another pick but not many people would buy an Azrael game.

I only watched a few vids on the 1st 2 locations but yea that one looks too linear with the single entrance/exit.

it was just a heart attack for me. i would've broken my desk if something hard startled me

it was definitely linear but it's a tutorial level. i just got into miami, feels so good to be back in this world

also hitman 2 seems to be continuing hitman 1's trend of being the only actually-funny games writing, thank gawd

I'm sure this was already addressed back when hitman 2016 released but I'm so glad they dropped the whole sleazy grindhouse shtick and leaned more into the baroque absurdism angle

I think no other series has managed to perfectly distill exactly what was always good about it to the degree that hitman has, especially this many games in

using spirelogs as a reference for slay the spire trivialized these early ascensions.

it also turns out that "harder classes" were the ones I was just awful at evaluating card quality

I like aspects of all of the hitmen, but the early ones are far too dependent on trial and error, and the new ones are freeform to the point of being near frictionless unless you set arbitrary challenges for yourself, which kind of messes with my gamer brain

when i first startedp laying i thought stacking flex and attacks was the best strategy. granted, most anything works on a0 with experience

need to do all these things

i'm only playing vermintide cause a friend wanted to. honestly, i'd probably recommend most people to hold off until at least the december dlc. the shadows one introduces 4 maps, which are all pretty muted-looking and monotonous, and make skittergate seem fun without any of the novelty. as soon as someone in your lobby owns the dlc, they get introduced into the pool, and while the first time through, with confusion and chaos and friends, it might be fun, on subsequent plays they're slogfests. aside from minor balancing and bugfixes, and yet still plenty remain, vermintide hasn't changed that much in its 7 months, which is disappointing
