reminder for ECHO, which was made by some ex-Hitman devs and might have been my favorite game last year

severe sense of place and the soundtrack is perfect

grab it in the next Steam sale https://store.steampowered.com/app/551770/ECHO/

re: broodstar ive been pretty curious about mary skelter, that one seems like it might be decent?

ive come close to picking it up on vita but i have a couple dungeon crawlers on there to finish as it is

labyrinth of refrain keeps showing up in my recs, and i dont have any DCs on my pc rn, so it might be something i pick up in a sale in a while, it looks pretty solid?

how did i not know about exapunks, that looks sick

i’m only two levels in (taking my friggin time) but it really feels like the hitman devs learned from the last game in the best way! the first two levels especially feel like do-overs of the last games weakest levels (marrakesh and colorado, respectively). the foliage stuff is so good

only complaints so far are that all the targets have been pretty sequestered from one another and that the levels haven’t had as much weird shimmying/vaulting as i like, probably because of how horizontal they are

i need to actually get Professional this time around

if it interests you at all, i'd very highly recommend it. it probably genuinely improves your ability to optimize code, but it's still intuitive enough for a programming n0b. also, one thing that's very surprising to me, it's that the ambiance is totally on point. there's a whole narrative, art style, and little quirks like hacking chat rooms that really paint a cyberpunk theme.

looking at reviews, seems labyrinth of refrain is the most solid j-dc in a while, but yeah, probably passing because 2 much shit to waste time on. i did play mary skelter for a bit and i'd imagine that ghostlight ports trump nisa's by a mile.

today will be Mhw and Dqxi day

also is the second act long? i heard you can progress to act 3 pretty quickly and made it sound like it's fairly optional

Liking the mignolay art. I thought I'd be turned off by the models as described (doom and duke classic with 8 sides each) but in practice they look fun. It seems like the shell game of ship stuff is much more ftl than xcom, but either way, I'm excited.

it is kind of weird to me how "XCOM" is journalistic shorthand for "it has procedural missions and a layer where you plan the missions"

I guess I assumed i) that the original games had been pretty much forgotten and were unknown to anyone under 30 and ii) that the firaxis games were still niche

im not sure what people consider the acts. apparently act 3 is post-game?

act 2 is probably a lot faster on a straight line, but essentially the game is structured like an hourglass where you kinda of backwards re-recruit your party as you visit places again.

but there's another set of subquests you get, and i never did like the casino and stuff so right now im kinda in a spot where im like doing one dungeon/combat oriented section and then doing a couple fuck around things and then going back. im not playing the game efficiently at all.

i think im close to 60 hours in, i figure from what i know i'll end up clocking in close to 100 on it.

i think i have my final party and final overworld transport though so it feels like im now on the last stretch. i did find the last story thing that happened very surprising and wonder if they are somehow going to flip it later on down the road.

really went into this one blind so i have no idea what's around re: post-game, alternate/true endings, etc.

i really have enjoyed the second act more than the first

ive also come to appreciate some of the "needless" stuff in the game

like, i think it's cool that you can move your characters around during battle even if it doesnt do anything, especially when im just rolling trash mobs for something and have 3/4 of the party on auto. it's cool to just run around and watch the fight from different angles since the animations/enemy models are so fucking good

I backed Underworld Ascendant, and I can't play it on my computer and they wouldn't let you transfer, even with a fee to the consoles they have confirmed. Little bummed

hey ive been pretty open about taking the easy road on this one

right now im overlevelled so im not gonna say no when im just using all base physical attacks anyway

have also found it a nice way to learn which classes enemies fall under by seeing what moves your party members use (im sure there's a bestiary but im lazy)

but again that's a big reason why im so into this game, im really hooked in the story. it's so basic and classic but still manages to keep me super engaged. normally ill finish a dungeon and then drop the game for the day or the week or the month or forever but this one i cant help but do another 30 minutes at 4 am just to see what's happening next

i actuall really like the gameplay. story is same ol' dq saves the world shit with a mix of time travel. i might even consider it 'merely above average' if not for draconian settings. it really keeps u on ur feet, and even putting chars on auto against trash mobs may lead to death, which is nice

no idea which classes enemies fall under though. nor elemental resistances. mostly a lot of guesswork that often leads to skills doing less damage than an autoattack

kenny get a computer lol
